Hybridization, Maternal Inheritance, and Evolutionary Time of Divergence of Endangered Species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Xingu River. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We uncover recent hybridization dynamics among three endemic Hypancistrus species from the Xingu River, including the critically endangered H. zebra. Mitogenomic analyses reveal unidirectional maternal inheritance and recent evolutionary radiation (< 0.5 Ma), explaining their retained reproductive compatibility.

A fractal pattern of hierarchical genetic population structure in mixed stocks across fish segregated by dams revealed by genomic resources for curimba Prochilodus lineatus. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract Genomic resources, new microsatellite markers and a novel observation of a fractal pattern in the genetic population structure are presented for curimba, Prochilodus lineatus, a freshwater migratory model species of South America. Our main goals were to investigate the presence of mixed fish stocks and the effects of damming‐induced ...

Integrative Taxonomy of Tereancistrum spp. (Monopisthocotyla: Dactylogyridae) Parasites of the Gills of Freshwater Fishes from the Caatinga Domain, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesPathogens
Tereancistrum is a common genus of Neotropical monopisthocotylans; however, information on its diversity and phylogeny remains limited. In this study, we describe four new species of Tereancistrum parasitizing the gills of Prochilodus brevis ...

Genomic Insights Into Carnivorous Fish in the Characiformes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study employed comparative genomic approaches using 12 high‐quality Characiformes genomes (covering nine subfamilies) with zebrafish as an outgroup to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the carnivorous adaptation of Characiformes. Expanded gene families, positively selected genes, and rapidly evolving genes in carnivorous species were ...

Ossification of the cranium of Inpaichthys kerri (Characiformes: Acestrorhamphidae) with discussion of paedomorphic traits in the genus. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
In this study, we present a detailed description of the cranial development of Inpaichthys kerri (Characiformes: Acestrorhamphidae), highlighting important topics such as pedomorphic characters and their relationship with ontogeny and phylogeny, as well as ossification sequences unique to the species. Abstract The study of development provides valuable

Eco-evolutionary factors that influence its demographic oscillations in Prochilodus costatus (Actinopterygii: Characiformes) populations evidenced through a genetic spatial-temporal evaluation. [PDF]

open access: yesEvol Appl, 2023
Abstract The human activity impact on wild animal populations is indicated by eco‐evolutionary and demographic processes, along with their survival and capacity to evolve; consequently, such data can contribute toward enhancing genetic‐based conservation programs.

Early Biogeography of Otophysi Points to the Neotropics as the Cradle of Characiphysan Fishes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Otophysan fishes represent 70% of living freshwater fishes with 12,000 species. Relationships among their four orders were explored through a dense taxonomic sampling including 529 complete mitochondrial genomes and 4 nuclear genes for 324 species.

Ontogeny of the Skeleton of Leporinus oliveirai (Characiformes, Anotomidae). [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
In this study, we provide the first complete description of the skeleton ontogeny of an anostomid. The developmental sequence of 141 bony elements is described and illustrated. The main discoveries are numerous conical teeth on the premaxilla and dentary that are replaced with three or four large incisiform multicuspid teeth, that become unicuspid in ...

Repetitive sequences: the hidden diversity of heterochromatin in prochilodontid fish [PDF]

open access: yesComparative Cytogenetics, 2015
The structure and organization of repetitive elements in fish genomes are still relatively poorly understood, although most of these elements are believed to be located in heterochromatic regions.
