Roles of the procollagen C-propeptides in health and disease.
Essays in Biochemistry, 2019The procollagen C-propeptides of the fibrillar collagens play key roles in the intracellular assembly of procollagen molecules from their constituent polypeptides chains, and in the extracellular assembly of collagen molecules into fibrils.

Radioimmunoassay for Human Procollagen
Science, 1974Rabbit antiserums were produced against the procollagen molecule secreted into the medium of cultured human skin fibroblasts. The isolated antigenic, amino terminal portion of the procollagen molecule was purified, labeled with iodine-125, and used in a radioimmunoassay which detected nanogram quantities of the same antigen.

Polymerization of procollagen in vitro
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure, 1974Abstract A form of collagen precursor is obtained by extraction of the dermis of dermatosparactic calves. The heat polymerization of this purified procollagen in various solutions has been compared to that of collagen similarly extracted from the dermis of normal calves. At 37°C and under physiological conditions of pH and ionic strength, 0.15 M NaCl-

The synthesis rates of fibrillar collagens can be assessed in blood by measuring propeptides set free from corresponding procollagens before fiber formation. Type I collagen is the major component of the organic matrix of bone, but it is also found in other connective tissues.

Sedlin Controls the ER Export of Procollagen by Regulating the Sar1 Cycle
Science, 2012A Tight Squeeze During intracellular transport, the export of procollagen from the endoplasmic reticulum is intriguing because procollagen is too large to fit into conventional coat protein complex II (COPII)–coated transport vesicles.

[4] Preparation and characterization of procollagens and procollagen-collagen intermediates
1982Publisher Summary This chapter describes specific methodology for the purification of the five different procollagen types both from tissues and from sources that synthesize these proteins in vitro. Smooth muscle cell cultures are chosen to isolate procollagen because the cells are easily propagated in tissue culture, they produce relatively large ...

Enzymes converting procollagens to collagens
Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 1985AbstractConversion from procollagen to collagen is a specific process that is a requirement for proper alignment of collagen molecules to form functional fibers. This process is catalyzed by at least three structurally and functionally distinct enzymes cleaving collagen types I–III.

Type I collagen of bone and tendon is derived from type I procollagen by proteolytic cleavage of propeptides from both extremities of the molecule, the propeptide cleavage being an essential feature prior to assembly of the collagen fibre.
