CH4 and N2 O emissions from smallholder agricultural systems on tropical peatlands in Southeast Asia. [PDF]
The aim of this study was to quantify soil CH4 and N2O fluxes from smallholder agricultural systems on tropical peatlands in Southeast Asia and assess their environmental controls. Annual CH4 emissions were strongly determined by water table depth (WTD) and increased exponentially when annual WTD was above −25 cm. In contrast, annual N2O emissions were

Hiding in plain sight: The underground palm Pinanga subterranea
The production of flowers and fruit below ground (geoflory and geocarpy, respectively) is a paradoxical reproductive strategy that seemingly hinders pollination and dispersal. Though rare, these phenomena occur in 33 angiosperm families. Plants that flower and fruit entirely below ground are exceptionally unusual.

Of the three sub‐species of Critically Endangered Bornean orangutans, Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus has the smallest population size. Our study found considerable decline of the populations, from 807 individuals in 1996 to 202 in 2010–2014 within the boundaries of Danau Sentarum National Park; and from 1578 to 71 in the outer boundaries of the Park.

Assessing the effects of oil palm replanting on arthropod biodiversity
Our findings indicate that total arthropod abundance is resilient to replanting of oil palm, but that replanting changes total arthropod and spider community composition and decreases spider abundance and species richness in some microhabitats. While it is somewhat encouraging from a management perspective that recommended replanting strategies ...
