Medicaid Reform: Few beneficiaries have participated in the opt-out program (Report No. 08-37)

open access: yes, 2008
The Medicaid opt-out program is a component of Florida’s Medicaid Reform initiative administered by the Agency for Health Care Administration. The program allows eligible beneficiaries to participate in their employer-sponsored health insurance plan as ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Crowdsourcing In-Situ Data on Land Cover and Land Use Using Gamification and Mobile Technology

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
Citizens are increasingly becoming involved in data collection, whether for scientific purposes, to carry out micro-tasks, or as part of a gamified, competitive application.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

CROMES v1.0: a flexible CROp Model Emulator Suite for climate impact assessment [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development
Global gridded crop models (GGCMs) are simulation tools designed for global, spatially explicit estimation of crop productivity and associated externalities. Key areas for their application are climate impact and adaptation studies.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

An application layer with protocol-based java smart contract verification

open access: yesFrontiers in Computer Science
Smart contracts are software that runs in blockchain and expresses the rules of an agreement between parties. An incorrect smart contract might allow blockchain users to violate its rules and even jeopardize its expected security.

Uncertainty in soil data can outweigh climate impact signals in global crop yield simulations

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Global gridded crop models are increasingly used to assess climate change impacts on food production. Here, the authors assess crop yield uncertainty associated with soil data input, reporting that soil type strongly influences yield estimates, and may ...

The effect of community resilience and disaster risk management cycle stages on morbi-mortality following floods: an empirical assessment [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
Practice and policy have emphasized the need for building resilience to climate-related events in a further warming world. Scholarship has studied resilience largely in terms of process, latent capacity informing vulnerability, or the outcome of risk ...
