Increased levels of serum surfactant protein D are associated with cardiovascular disease incidence in the Spanish adult population: Di@bet.es study

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Clinical Investigation, Volume 56, Issue 2, February 2026.
Surfactant protein D (SP‐D), an innate immune system component, is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events incidence in the Spanish adult general population. Higher SP‐D categories were linked to a greater risk of developing CVD, even among non‐smokers, despite increased SP‐D levels being traditionally related to smoking. The addition of SP‐

Glyoxalase‐1 Inhibition Leads to Ferroptosis Induction in Lung Cancer Cells: A Dual Mechanism of Action of Hydroxamic Acids Derived from Cysteine

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 1, January 2026.
A set of three cysteine‐derived hydroxamic acids were synthesized and evaluated for human gloxalase‐1 inhibition and ferroptosis induction activities. Among them, compound 2 exhibited a potent inhibitory effect against human glyoxalase‐1 and induced ferroptosis in non‐small cell lung cancer cell lines, increasing reactive oxygen species production and ...

National Adoption of World Health Organization Recommendations on Calcium Supplementation During Pregnancy

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1554, Issue 1, Page 87-94, December 2025.
In many countries, pregnant women have low calcium intake and high mortality from hypertensive disorders, despite evidence that supplementation reduces risk and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent pre‐eclampsia. We reviewed antenatal guidelines in 194 countries and identified 92; 58 addressed calcium, of which 29 ...

Insulin resistance, overweight, and obesity in apheresis donors: A call to reevaluate their eligibility—A prospective cohort study

open access: yesTransfusion, Volume 65, Issue 6, Page 1072-1082, June 2025.
Abstract Background Apheresis procedures and the infusion of acid‐citrate‐dextrose induce metabolic alterations that may influence glucose metabolism. Although insulin resistance (IR), overweight, and obesity are not exclusion criteria for blood donation, their impact during apheresis procedure and on post‐donation metabolic responses remains ...

The Cyclin‐Dependent Kinase activity modulates the central carbon metabolism in maize during germination

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 177, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
Abstract The cell cycle is predominantly controlled by Cyclins/Cyclin‐Dependent Kinases (Cyc/CDK) complexes, which phosphorylate targets involved in cellular proliferation. Evidence suggests that Cyc/CDK targets extend beyond traditional proteins and include enzymes that regulate the central carbon metabolism.
