Fracture evolution of a thick soft protection layer and the water inrush mechanism in overburden under longwall mining

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Through shear–tensile creep tests and viscoelastic modeling, the fracture evolution of thick soft protective layers is clarified. Results show thickness‐dependent rheological failure modes that govern four types of roof water inrush, providing a mechanism‐based framework for hazard prediction and control. Abstract In the Jurassic coal‐bearing strata of

Defect Engineering and Effect of Vacancy Concentration on the Electrochemical Performance of V‐Based MXenes

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Using a top‐down defect engineering approach, controllable vacancy concentrations are introduced into V‐based MXenes by rationally designing the precursor MAX phase, aiming to investigate the effect of vacancy concentration on the electrochemical performance.

Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes From CO2 Enabled by Fe–Mo Bimetallic Catalysts via Effective CO2 Scavenging

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
The tandem process involves CO2 methanation and CH4 pyrolysis for CNT synthesis. Unreacted CO2 and H2 from methanation oxidize Fe, suppressing CNT growth on Fe‐only catalysts. Incorporation of Mo into Fe/MgO forms Mo2C, which prevents Fe oxidation under CO2/H2 conditions and thereby enables CNT formation.

Anion Concentration–Regulated Interface Stabilization Enabling High‐Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A higher anion concentration promotes the formation of a LiF‐rich SEI on the Li surface, thereby stabilizing the interface and modifying Li deposition behavior and dendrite morphology, which ultimately determines the cycling performance of Li metal batteries.

Developing a Suitable Anion Exchange Layer Structure for Pure–Water Fed Bipolar Membrane CO2 Electrolysis

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A porous anion exchange layer (AEL) is implemented in a forward‐biased bipolar membrane CO2 electrolyzer to suppress carbonate crossover, support CO2 regeneration and maintain cathode alkalinity. Two fabrication strategies are compared—deposition on a silver gas diffusion electrode (GDE) or on the CEM—showing that a porous AEL‐coated GDE provides the ...

An integrated approach for evaluating the effectiveness of landslide risk reduction in unplanned communities in the Caribbean [PDF]

open access: yes
Despite the recognition of the need for mitigation approaches to landslide risk in developing countries, the delivery of ‘on-the-ground’ measures is rarely undertaken. With respect to other ‘natural’ hazards it is widely reported that mitigation can pay.

Anode/Electrolyte Interfacial Engineering Toward Sustainable and Practical Solid‐State Metal‐Sulfur Batteries: A Prospective Review

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Coordinated engineering of the anode, electrolyte, and interface underpins the rational design of next‐generation solid‐state metal‐sulfur batteries. Solid‐state metal‐sulfur batteries are emerging as a transformative energy storage platform with the potential to overcome the fundamental limitations of conventional flooded cells, particularly ...

Could flooding undermine progress in building climate-resilient crops?

open access: yesTrends in Plant Science
Flooding threatens crop productivity, agricultural sustainability, and global food security. In this article I review the effects of flooding on plants and highlight three important gaps in our understanding: (i) effects of flooding on ecological interactions mediated by plants both below (changing root metabolites and exudates) and aboveground ...
