Prolactin and autoimmunity

Autoimmunity Reviews, 2002
Prolactin (PRL) is a versatile hormone that is produced by the anterior pituitary gland and various extrapituitary sites including immune cells. Furthermore, PRL has widespread influences on proliferation and differentiation of a variety of cells in the immune system and is, in effect, a cytokine.

Prolactin in psychiatry

American Journal of Psychiatry, 1981
Prolactin is a protein hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. Because the monoamines dopamine and serotonin are important in the control of its secretion, prolactin has been the subject of much psychoendocrine research in recent years.

Prolactin variants

Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1992
Prolactin (PRL) is one of the most versatile hormones of the pituitary in terms of biologic actions, but how a single molecule is able to evoke so many different responses in the organism is not known. Research in recent years has uncovered a surprising degree of structural polymorphism for PRL, the different forms having variable biopotencies.

Prolactin stimulation of prolactin receptors in rat liver

Life Sciences, 1975
Abstract Hypophysectomy of the female rat results in a loss of prolactin receptors from the liver. Seventy percent of specific prolactin binding is lost within 24 hours; by 48 hours receptor levels are less than 5% of those found in livers from intact rats.

Immunoreactive prolactins of the neurohypophyseal system display actions characteristic of prolactin and 16K prolactin

Endocrine, 1995
We have described the expression of the prolactin (PRL) gene and the occurrence of PRL-like immunoreactive proteins in the hypothalamic-neurophypophyseal system of the rat. Here, we investigated the nature of neurohypophyseal PRL-like antigens, by studying the biological activity of medium conditioned by incubated neurohypophyses in specific bioassays ...

Pituitary production of prolactin and prolactin-suppressing drugs

Lupus, 2001
Prolactin secretion from the anterior pituitary is mediated via dopaminergic pathways. Any process that alters dopamine production or transport in the central nervous system may lead to hyperprolactinemia. Most cases of hyperprolactinemia are due to prolactin secreting pituitary tumors or to medications which alter dopamine production.

PHYSIOLOGY OF PROLACTIN

Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1980
The principal physiologic effect of PRL in human females is the initiation of lactation. The cellular events leading to actual secretion of breast milk are reasonably well defined in the experimental animal. Other than the direct effects on breast tissue in pregnancy, prolactin's role at puberty, during the menstrual cycle, and in pregnancy is poorly ...
