Application of Prony Series to Linear Viscoelasticity

Transactions of the Society of Rheology, 1970
A new method for description of viscoelastic functions with Prony series of exponentials is presented and compared with existing methods. This method places constraints on the coefficients of the series which guarantees smoothness of the functions and a discrete spectral representation. An optimization technique is used to obtain the solution.

Investigation of Prony series model related asphalt mixture properties under different confining pressures

Construction and Building Materials, 2018
Abstract The objective of this paper is to investigate linear viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures measured under different confining pressures with respect to master curves of complex modulus, relaxation time and modulus of Prony series model.

Improved methodology for identifying Prony series coefficients based on continuous relaxation spectrum method

Materials and Structures, 2019
The Prony series models have been widely utilized in characterizing the linear viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures. However, the determination of the time coefficients, as a crucial step in identifying the Prony series coefficients, is based on empirical adjustments and time-consuming selections.

Methods of interconversion between linear viscoelastic material functions. Part I—a numerical method based on Prony series

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1999
The paper presents an efficient numerical method for the study of interconversion between modulus and compliance functions of a linear viscoelastic material, when both the source and target transient functions admit a Prony (exponential) representation.

A Prony-series type viscoelastic solid coupled with a continuum damage law for polar ice modeling

Mechanics of Materials, 2016
Abstract Predicting the time-dependent behavior of polar ice is a significant challenge especially when damage effects are considered. In the present work, ice is modeled by a generalized Maxwell type viscoelastic solid and coupled to a continuum damage model. Viscoelastic behavior is obtained by a Prony-series expansion where the shear components of

Drying Shrinkage Crack Analysis of Concrete Using Optimized Prony Series

Journal of the Architectural Institute of Korea Structure & Construction, 2015
If the concrete members are restrained, drying shrinkage strain develops tensile stress and consequently develops cracks. Creep which is another long term characteristic of concrete relaxes the tensile stress due to shrinkage. Creep is represented in the form of creep function or relaxation function and the relaxation effect of creep can be considered ...

Interconversion of linearly viscoelastic material functions expressed as Prony series: a closure

Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materials, 2012
Interconversion of viscoelastic material functions is a longstanding problem that has received attention since the 1950s. There is currently no accepted methodology for interconverting viscoelastic material functions due to the lack of stability and accuracy of the existing methods. This paper presents a new exact, analytical interconversion method for

Estimation of viscoelastic parameters in Prony series from shear wave propagation

Journal of Applied Physics, 2016
When acquiring accurate ultrasonic images, we must precisely estimate the mechanical properties of the soft tissue. This study investigates and estimates the viscoelastic properties of the tissue by analyzing shear waves generated through an acoustic radiation force.

Prony Series Spectra of Structural Relaxation in N-BK7 for Finite Element Modeling

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2012
Structural relaxation behavior of N-BK7 glass was characterized at temperatures 20 °C above and below T(12) for this glass, using a thermo mechanical analyzer (TMA). T(12) is a characteristic temperature corresponding to a viscosity of 10(12) Pa·s. The glass was subject to quick temperature down-jumps preceded and followed by long isothermal holds. The
