Self-propelling slugs

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2002
Surface coating is generally achieved by an active operation: painting with a brush; withdrawing from a bath. Porous imbibition constitutes a more passive way: a porous material just put in contact with a reservoir containing a wetting fluid is spontaneously invaded. In this case, the material can eventually be filled by the fluid. If the aim is to

Propelled

2020
Abstract Weaving together stories from sources as wide-ranging as classical literature, social and cognitive psychology, philosophy, art, and video games, Propelled: How Boredom, Frustration, and Anticipation Lead Us to the Good Life makes a lively case for the value of discontent in our lives.

Self-Propelled Nanotools

ACS Nano, 2012
We describe nanoscale tools in the form of autonomous and remotely guided catalytically self-propelled InGaAs/GaAs/(Cr)Pt tubes. These rolled-up tubes with diameters in the range of 280-600 nm move in hydrogen peroxide solutions with speeds as high as 180 μm s(-1).

Motorboat Propeller Injuries

Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2000
Abstract The authors anlayze the case of an Albanian refugee who was killed by the propellers of the outboard engine of a rubber dinghy while illegally attempting to reach Italy. The finding of multiple parallel, deep clear-cut injuries is uncommon, but highly characteristic of the object producing the lesions.

Motorboat Propeller Injuries

Annals of Plastic Surgery, 1998
It is estimated that approximately 25% of the population of the United States participates in recreational boating activities in a given year. These activities result in 7,000 reported accidents, 60% of which result in injuries. Of these injuries, 19% are fatal (11.3% of accidents).

Propeller Induced Velocities in Ducted Propellers

SNAME Propellers '84 Symposium, 1984
This paper presents the results of flow measurements in the nozzle opening of ducted propellers operating in both open and behind conditions. The open-water test measurements show the propeller induced velocities in nozzle opening differ from the results from conventional propeller measurements.

Toxicity of Propellants

1974
This report summarizes the available information on the toxicity of 15 propellants used in aerosols. After reviewing the results derived from various animal species, the following classifications are proposed: Low-pressure propellants of high toxicity: trichlorofluoromethane (FC 11), dichloromonofluoromethane (FC 21), trichlorotrifluoroethane (FC
