Measurement of propionate turnover in vivo using sodium [2H5]propionate and sodium [13C]propionate
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1989The outcome for children with inherited disorders of propionate metabolism is poor. To facilitate development of improved treatment in these conditions, we described techniques for the estimation of the rate of production and removal of propionate in vivo.

Sources of propionate in inborn errors of propionate metabolism
Metabolism, 1990Amino acids are widely regarded as the most important sources of propionate in disorders of propionate metabolism. Propionate production was measured in the fasting state by continuous infusion of sodium [1-13C]propionate in three children with methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and three with propionic acidemia (PA).

Survey of baked goods for propionic acid and propionates
Food Additives and Contaminants, 1996One hundred and thirty samples comprising bread (64), hamburger buns (33), pittas (16), cakes (9) and Christmas puddings (8) from various retail outlets in the UK, have been analysed for the preservative propionic acid. Only one sample of bread, two samples of hamburger buns and three samples of pitta contained propionic acid in excess of 1000 mg/kg ...

Syntrophic Propionate Oxidation
1990In vivo high-resolution NMR with the Gram-negative Syntrophobacter wolinii and a Gram-positive syntrophic propionate oxidizing organism, indicated the involvement of an oxaloacetate: propionyl-CoA transcarboxylase in propionate oxidation. This finding was confirmed by enzyme measurement in cell-free extracts.

During the past years, there has been a growing interest in the bioproduction of propionic acid by Propionibacterium. One of the major limitations of the existing models lies in their low productivity yield. Hence, many strategies have been proposed in order to circumvent this obstacle.
