Propionibacterium acnes Orbital Abscess

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1990
Propionibacterium acnes is a ubiquitous, gram-positive, anaerobic organism. Long thought to be a harmless commensal species, it has become implicated in ocular disease. We report a P acnes orbital abscess that, to our knowledge, is the first reported case of a primary P acnes infection of the orbit in the ophthalmic literature. Report of a Case.

The biotin requirements of the genus Propionibacterium

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1955
Abstract Data are presented giving the exact nutritional requirements of several strains of propionibacteria for biotin, oxybiotin, and dethiobiotin. Certain interesting and unexpected properties of biotin are revealed by this study.

An evaluation of the taxonomy of Propionibacterium

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1968
The object of this study was to reevaluate speciation of Propionibacterium by using numerical taxonomy. Fifty-six cultures representing eight species were studied. Thirty-eight morphological and physiological features were employed in the calculation of matching coefficients which were used to sort the cultures into groups.

Exoenzymes of Propionibacterium acnes

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1982
Thirty strains of Propionibacterium acnes were grown in basal salt medium containing lecithin as a lipid substrate and in other media. The cultures were assayed for production of lipase (measured as fatty acid esterase) and other exoenzymes. Lipase was assayed spectrophotometrically; other enzymes were assayed using the API ZYM system (Analytab ...

Infection Caused by Propionibacterium in Children

Clinical Pediatrics, 1994
Three hundred eighty-six isolates of Propionibacterium sp. were recovered from 2,003 specimens studied for the identification of anaerobic bacteria in children during a 15-year period. Three hundred forty-three (89%) of these were Propionibacterium acnes.
