New Mathematical Models for Calculating the Proppant Embedment and Conductivity

International Petroleum Technology Conference, 2013
Abstract Proppant embedment plays a significant role in decreasing fracture aperture and conductivity, especially for weakly consolidated sandstones, shale (oil and gas) rock, and coal beds. Empirical and semi-empirical models were usually used to calculate the embedment of proppants.

Evolution of Proppant Embedment and its Impact on Shale Permeability

58th U.S. Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium
ABSTRACT: Hydraulic fracturing is important for modern gas extraction. However, the proppant embedment affects gas recovery significantly. This study investigates the impact of proppant embedment on permeability over time in shale reservoirs.

Evaluation of geothermal development considering proppant embedment in hydraulic fractures

Renewable Energy, 2020
Abstract Conductivity in hydraulic fractures embedded with proppants has a great impact on the efficiency of geothermal development in an enhanced geothermal system. This study explores the effects of proppants and hydraulic fracture arrangement on the efficiency of geothermal development by developing a thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled model.

Reservoir Depletion-Induced Proppant Embedment and Dynamic Fracture Closure

SPE Middle East Oil and Gas Show and Conference, 2019
Abstract An optimized stimulation design not only achieves high productivity during early times, but also necessitates maintaining conductive flow paths during the life of a well. Because of proppant settling and bridging, proppants are not uniformly distributed within developed fracture networks.

The influence of proppant breakage, embedding, and particle migration on fracture conductivity

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2020
Abstract Many studies that aim to reduce the damage to fracture conductivity caused by proppant breakage and embedding have been conducted. Few studies, however, have addressed the damage to conductivity caused by proppant particle migration, which is often neglected in practical design.

A Model to Calculate Fracture Conductivity Considering Proppant Transport and Embedment Depth

Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils, 2021
The accuracy of predicting fracture conductivity is very important in hydraulic fracturing. However, most models pay more attention to the solution of fracture conductivity value, without considering the distribution of the fracture conductivity. It is also important to couple the proppant embedment depth and fracture conductivity, especially for the ...

Decomposition of Rock Deformation During Proppant Embedment

58th U.S. Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium
ABSTRACT: The deep-formation rock has various deformation modes such as viscosity, elasticity and plasticity under the action of complex geo-stress, high temperature and high pore pressure. These deformation modes increase the proppant embedment depth at different stages and affect the long-term conductivity of the ...

A new mechanistic model for conductivity of hydraulic fractures with proppants embedment and compaction

Journal of Hydrology, 2021
Abstract To extract unconventional energy more efficiently, the hydraulic fracturing technology is widely used to create fracture network in formations and facilitate the transport of hydrocarbons to production wells. Nevertheless, fracture conductivity decreases sharply and continuously due to the increase of closure pressure (or effective stress ...

Improved discrete element modeling for proppant embedment into rock surfaces

Acta Geotechnica, 2019
Brinell indentation tests were performed on Montney siltstone, and the results were compared with discrete element indentation simulations that use the micro-parameters calibrated using compression test data from the same siltstone samples. The simulated proppant indentation into the rock surface can be 15% less than the laboratory measurements.
