A new mechanistic model for conductivity of hydraulic fractures with proppants embedment and compaction

Journal of Hydrology, 2021
Abstract To extract unconventional energy more efficiently, the hydraulic fracturing technology is widely used to create fracture network in formations and facilitate the transport of hydrocarbons to production wells. Nevertheless, fracture conductivity decreases sharply and continuously due to the increase of closure pressure (or effective stress ...

Modeling Fracture Closure with Proppant Settling and Embedment during Shut-In and Production

SPE Drilling & Completion, 2020
Summary Fracture closure and proppant settling are two fully coupled processes during both shut-in and production. Proppant distribution greatly affects the residual fracture width and conductivity evolution, whereas fracture closure might limit proppant settling and force the proppant to crush or embed into the rock.

Improved discrete element modeling for proppant embedment into rock surfaces

Acta Geotechnica, 2019
Brinell indentation tests were performed on Montney siltstone, and the results were compared with discrete element indentation simulations that use the micro-parameters calibrated using compression test data from the same siltstone samples. The simulated proppant indentation into the rock surface can be 15% less than the laboratory measurements.

Indentaion Hardness for Improved Proppant Embedment Prediction in Shale Formations

SPE European Formation Damage Conference and Exhibition, 2015
Abstract The aim of hydraulic fracturing is the generation and maintenance of highly permeable pathways. To achieve this, a high hydraulic pressure is applied to overcome the breakdown pressure in developed formations. To avoid the closure of the generated fractures due to the acting in-situ stress in the subsurface, proppantsareused ...

Computation model of proppant embedment depth based on dimensional analysis

Journal of Coal Science and Engineering (China), 2013
Hydraulic fracturing is designed to form a high-conductivity fracture. The proppant will embed into the formation rock, especially in soft rock, owing to the interaction between proppant and fracture surface after fracture closure. Proppant embedment would reduce the fracture width and then lower the fracture conductivity.

Embedment of High Strength Proppant into Low-Permeability Reservoir Rock

SPE/DOE Low Permeability Gas Reservoirs Symposium, 1981
ABSTRACT Embedment of sintered bauxite into Berea, sandstone core, and shale core at closure pressures up to 10,000 psi (69 MPa) is reported. Several variables influencing fracture closure are examined: closure pressure, proppant size and size distribution, proppant concentration (up to a monolayer), formation hardness and surface ...

Influences of Proppant Concentration and Fracturing Fluids on Proppant-Embedment Behavior for Inhomogeneous Rock Medium: An Experimental and Numerical Study

SPE Production & Operations, 2018
Summary Proppant plays a vital role in hydraulic fracturing in tight oil/gas production because it helps to keep the fractures open during the production process. However, it is common for proppant embedment, the main type of proppant degradation, to occur under high compression load, which greatly reduces the fracture conductivity, and ...

Impact of Remedial Acid Practices on Proppant Embedment and Fracture Face Permeability

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2020
Abstract Acid stimulation is a common remedial practice for formations that produce below the target production rates. Acid stimulation can be performed during the early-life of a well, soon after the well is put on production, or more typically, following a production period once production rates have started to decline.
