Propulsive performance of a body with a traveling-wave surface

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2012
A body with a traveling-wave surface (TWS) is investigated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation numerically to understand the mechanisms of a novel propulsive strategy. In this study, a virtual model of a foil with a flexible surface which performs a traveling-wave movement is used as a free swimming body.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Hydrodynamic and Flow Field Characteristics of Water Jet Propulsion under Mooring Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
The acceleration characteristics of a water jet-propelled ship during startup are related to its performance under mooring conditions. Water jet propulsion cavitation during startup increases the vibration and noise of the whole ship.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.
