Signal honesty and predation risk among a closely related group of aposematic species. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This is the final version of the article. It first appeared from NPG via http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/srep11021Many animals have bright colours to warn predators that they have defences and are not worth attacking.

Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Serbia: Its presence on aphid-infested plants and co-occurrence with native aphidophagous coccinellids [PDF]

open access: yesPesticidi i Fitomedicina, 2020
The presence of the invasive coccinellid Harmonia axyridis in aphid colonies on plants, as well as its co-occurrence with native coccinellid predators was studied in the period 2011-2020.

The effects of six species of aphids on some life history parameters of the ladybird Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2005
One of the factors affecting the effectiveness of predatory coccinellids in an aphid infested crop is the food specificity of the predator. The response towards six species of aphids (Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) was therefore tested in one of the most ...

Antennal morphology and sensilla of the predaceous ladybirds, Menochilus sexmaculatus and Propylea dissecta

open access: yesEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, 2021
Menochilus sexmaculatus and Propylea dissecta (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) are predaceous ladybird beetles with immense biological control potential. The morphology of the antennae of the adults along with the diversity and distribution of sensilla were investigated using a scanning electron microscope as they are the main sensory organs involved in ...

Suitability of various prey types for the development of Propylea japonica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2007
The relative suitability of three prey organisms, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) eggs, B. tabaci nymphs, and Myzus persicae (Sulzer), to the ladybird Propylea japonica (Thunberg) was evaluated under laboratory conditions.

Abundance of Coccinellids and Their Potential Prey in Field-Crop and Grass Habitats in Eastern South Dakota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A rich fauna of coccinellids occurs in eastern South Dakota, but the abundance of some species has declined in association with the establishment of an exotic lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), in the mid-1980s.

Determinants of mating success in a lek‐mating species

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 27, Issue 4, Page 643-652, November 2025.
Abstract Leks are male‐biased aggregations formed for mating, where sperm is the only resource acquired by visiting females. One of the many advantages of leks is the possibility to efficiently assess the quality of potential mates by comparing aggregated individuals of the same sex with one another. When direct mate choice occurs in a lekking species,

Predicting the potential geographical distribution of the harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, using the CLIMEX model - BioControl [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a ladybird beetle native to temperate and subtropical parts of Asia. Since 1916 populations of this species have been introduced throughout the world, either deliberately, or by accident ...

Exploring the Influence of Insect Honeydew on Plant Physiology and Health: Bridging the Gap in Current Understanding

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 177, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
ABSTRACT Honeydew, a sugary excretion from sap‐feeding insects, significantly influences plant‐insect interactions. While extensive research has examined honeydew's composition, regulation, and role in insect‐plant relationships, its direct effects on plant physiology and health remain understudied.

Interspecific differences of ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in their repellency to ants

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 327, Issue 1, Page 73-83, September 2025.
Our study found that, unlike those from mealworms, compounds in whole‐body extracts of ladybirds effectively deterred ants. No correlation was found between the degree of aposematic colouration (highly conspicuous vs. less conspicuous) and repellence. Mycophagous ladybird species exhibited levels of protection comparable to predatory species, and large
