Prostate cancer accounted for over 41,000 deaths in the United States in 1996. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening is capable of detecting prostate cancer and appears to detect cancers that are both clinically significant as well as organ-confined, and therefore potentially curable. The positive predictive value of PSA value has been increased by

▪ Abstract Over the last several years, the development of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and technical refinements of anatomic radical prostatectomy have revolutionized the care of patients with prostate cancer. Serum PSA testing often allows early diagnosis of organ-confined prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer and chronic prostatitis
Current Prostate Reports, 2007Prostate cancer and chronic prostatitis are prevalent disorders in men. The cause of prostate cancer and chronic prostatitis is multifocal and diverse. Twenty cases of granulomatous prostatitis are presented. They were identified, histologically or cytologically, among 1,316 patients with prostatic pathology at the General Hospital of Asturias during a period of 3 years (Jan. 1984 to Dec. 1986). The etiology, histogenesis, clinical and morphological aspects, treatment and prognosis of the different ...

The presence of calculi in 300 whole prostates from consecutive autopsies were investigated by the Faxitron imaging technique. Calculi were found in 99% of the prostates, their number and size increasing with age. They were mainly localized in the ducts in the borderzone between the middle lobes and the periferal prostate posterolaterally, but often ...

Prostatic aspergillosis is rare with only 3 cases reported previously. We report a case of localized invasive aspergillosis of the prostate in a nonimmunocompromised patient with chronic urinary retention and recurrent urinary tract infections. Transurethral resection followed by open prostatectomy was performed for massive prostatomegaly.
