Hypotheses are reviewed concerning which segments of the primitively five-segmented palpus are coalesced to form the simple, linear, four-segmented form characteristic of labidostommatid mites. Among alternatives, those of either a femurogenu or a tibiotarsus are not based on convincing evidence.
