Quality of marine protected areas is critical to achieving global biodiversity targets
Summarising CBD target 3 to “30 × 30” emphasizes area coverage, but conservation success depends on MPA quality. Many existing MPAs are under-protected, and rapidly designating new areas risks creating ‘paper parks’ without ecological or social benefits.

Global protected area impacts [PDF]
Protected areas (PAs) dominate conservation efforts. They will probably play a role in future climate policies too, as global payments may reward local reductions of loss of natural land cover. We estimate the impact of PAs on natural land cover within each of 147 countries by comparing outcomes inside PAs with outcomes outside.

Essential planetary health workers: Positioning rangers within global policy
Our planet is facing increasing challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, pandemics, poverty, and many other problems closely linked to a deteriorating environment.

Privately protected areas increase global protected area coverage and connectivity
Privately protected areas (PPAs) are increasing in number and extent. Yet, we know little about their contribution to conservation and how this compares to other forms of protected area (PA). We address this gap by assessing the contribution of 17,561 PPAs to the coverage, complementarity and connectivity of existing PA networks in 15 countries across ...

Wetlands globally have and continue to undergo modification from anthropogenic and natural environmental factors. To bridge this gap, this study utilised a GIS-based approach to quantify the areal extent of human footprint disturbances to wetlands over ...

Protected areas and poverty [PDF]
Protected areas are controversial because they are so important for conservation and because they distribute fortune and misfortune unevenly. The nature of that distribution, as well as the terrain of protected areas themselves, have been vigorously contested.

Global climate change, habitat fragmentation, and human interference have resulted in a significant, ongoing decline in the population of goitered gazelles. Effective conservation strategies require an understanding of resource requirements of threatened

Hydrometeorology and landscapes control sediment and dissolved organic carbon mobility across a diverse and changing glacier-sourced river basin [PDF]
Northern landscapes are enduring ongoing impacts of anthropogenic land use and climate change. Rivers are valuable indicators of this change reflected by the timing and amount of water and terrestrial material they mobilize.

Marine Protected Areas should be managed with greater integration
Like their counterparts on land, protected areas in U.S. coastal waters are numerous and complex. California alone has 104 marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs carry a variety of names.
