PROTECTED CULTIVATION IN TURKEY

Acta Horticulturae, 1999
Protected cultivation began in the 1940's in Turkey in glasshouses built in Antalya. After plastics introduced to agriculture, protected cultivation area increased rapidly and now total area has reached to 33,834 ha. Area under low plastic tunnel is 58 % of the total, while the rest belongs to greenhouses.

Recent developments in protected cultivation

Acta Horticulturae, 2021
Global protected cultivation area is estimated at more than 5 million ha. While very simple structures are adopted in mild winter climatic conditions, high technology greenhouses are used in Northern countries and where the environmental control is more demanding due to outdoor climate and demand of the market for high-quality produce.
