Parks, people and pixels: evaluating landscape effects of an East African national park on its surroundings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Landscapes surrounding protected areas, while still containing considerable biodiversity, have rapidly growing human populations and associated agricultural development in most of the developing world that tend to isolate them, potentially reducing their

Occurrence and bionomy of Barbitistes constrictus (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) in the eastern part of the Czech Republic

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2006
The bionomy of Barbitistes constrictuswas studied using emergence traps, sticky bands, sweeping and counting of females in two localities and Malaise traps in 27 localities in spruce forests in the eastern part of the Czech Republic in 1998-2004. It is a

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The effects of rapid urbanization on forest landscape connectivity in Zhuhai city, China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Urban forests can provide the necessary ecosystem services for their residents and play an important part in improving the urban environment. Forest landscape connectivity is a vital indicator reflecting the quality of the ecological environment and ...

Editorial: Mountain landscapes: Protected areas, ecosystem services, and future challenges

open access: yesEcosystem Services, 2021
Mountain regions provide crucial ecosystem services (ES) to their inhabitants and to the surrounding lowland populations. However, multiple anthropogenic drivers, such as land-use change, climate change, overexploitation, and population growth severely affect mountain socio-ecological systems, with huge effects on ES provision.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Conservation of birds in fragmented landscapes requires protected areas

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, 2022
For successful conservation of biodiversity, it is vital to know whether protected areas in increasingly fragmented landscapes effectively safeguard species. However, how large habitat fragments must be, and what level of protection is required to sustain species, remains poorly known.

The comparison of shape indices and perimeter interface of selected protected areas especially with reference to Sariska Tiger Reserve, India

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2019
The extent of interface between wilderness and human dominated landscape is one of many factors that determine the disturbance intensity endured by the biological diversity of any particular area. The intensity of human-wildlife conflict is the secondary
