Protection for Sale or Surge Protection? [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper asks whether the results obtained from using the standard approach to testing the influential Grossman and Helpman %u201Cprotection for sale (PFS)%u201D model of political economy might arise from a simpler setting.

Protection and Safety Evaluation of Live Constructions Derived from the Pgm and pPCP1 Yersinia pestis Strain

open access: yesVaccines, 2020
Based on a live attenuated Yersinia pestis KIM10(pCD1Ap) strain (Pgm−, pPCP1−), we attempted to engineer its lipid A species to achieve improvement of immunogenicity and safety. A mutant strain designated as YPS19(pCD1Ap), mainly synthesizing

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Electromagnetic cloak design with mono-objective and bi-objective optimizers: seeking the best tradeoff between protection and invisibility

open access: yesEPJ Applied Metamaterials
We revisit the design of cloaks, without resorting to any geometric transform. Cancellation techniques and anomalous resonances have been applied for this purpose. Instead of a deductive reasoning, we propose a novel mono-objective optimization algorithm,

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Power, politics and privilege: public health at the Thai-Burma border

open access: yesForced Migration Review, 2016
Participants in a field-research methods course on refugee health at the Thai-Burma border learned that beyond the biological vectors and disease processes that contribute to human suffering, power, politics and privilege play central roles in negatively
