The effect of acetylcysteine on the prothrombin time and international normalized ratio: a narrative review [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Toxicology
INTRODUCTION: Patients poisoned with paracetamol are treated with acetylcysteine. In patients without hepatocellular injury, an increased prothrombin time or international normalized ratio has been observed during acetylcysteine administration.

Plasma tissue factor antigen levels in capillary whole blood and venous blood: Effect of tissue factor on prothrombin time

open access: yes, 1997
To measure the amount of tissue factor released during specimen collection and its potential effect of shortening the prothrombin time, we measured tissue factor and prothrombin time in twenty-three paired venous and capillary blood samples from ...

Thromboplastin Time (Prothrombin Time)

1965
Publisher Summary This chapter elaborates thromboplastin time that is, prothrombin time. Blood plasma contains 300–400 mg% fibrinogen, and during coagulation of blood this is converted to insoluble fibrin by thrombin. The highly active enzyme thrombin is formed from an inactive precursor, prothrombin.

Simplified Prothrombin Time Standardization

Haemostasis, 2009
An analysis of prothrombin time (PT) standardization methods is presented. The present recommended ratio method demonstrated complex calibration and wide therapeutic ranges. Standardization by coagulation activities resulted in different therapeutic ranges due to the different sensitivity of assays for the protein induced by vitamin K absence (Pivka ...

The Influence of Heparin on the Prothrombin Time

Pharmacotherapy: The Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy, 1991
We studied the effect of known concentrations of heparin on the prothrombin time (PT) in patients receiving warfarin and in controls who were not anticoagulated. Plasma from the subjects and controls was serially diluted with known concentrations of heparin, and PT was measured.

The action of Dicumarol in the human being on plasma prothrombin time and total prothrombin time

American Heart Journal, 1952
Abstract In man, Dicumarol causes an increase in the plasma and in the total prothrombin times. The explanation is offered that Dicumarol reduces both the free and total prothrombin and that a rough ratio between the two forms is maintained. The practical significance of this observation is discussed.

Consumption Time Is Not Prothrombin Time

JAMA, 1964
To the Editor:— Regarding the communication, "Spontaneous Intracranial Hematomas in Patients Receiving Anticoagulation Therapy" (JAMA187:396 [Feb 8] 1964), Drs. Dooley and Perlmutter comment that "The degree of anticoagulation in patients receiving coumarin derivatives is usually evaluated by measuring the prothrombin consumption time." It is ...
