Untangling the “Renicola somateria” (Digenea, Renicolidae) Muddle: Actual Number of Species and Their Distribution and Transmission in the Holarctic

open access: yesDiversity
Renicolids are parasites of aquatic birds. Their species identification based on morphological characters is problematic. Here, we revised the composition of Renicola spp.

Renicola spp. (Digenea, Renicolidae) of the ‘Duck Clade’ with Description of the Renicola mollissima Kulachkova, 1957 Life Cycle

open access: yesDiversity
Renicolid digeneans parasitise aquatic birds. In molecular trees, they are divided into three clades, one of which, the ‘duck clade’, parasitises anatids. Renicola mollissima, a member of this clade, parasitises sea ducks, mainly eiders.

The Future of (Soil) Microbiome Studies: Current Limitations, Integration, and Perspectives

open access: yesmSystems, 2021
Microbes dominate the planet’s biodiversity in terms of species number and by driving essential Earth system functions such as the carbon cycle. Soils contain most of this microbial biodiversity.

Gardiquimod Nanoemulsion Targets Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Lesions Reducing Systemic Toxicity and Parasite Burden

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoemulsion delivery of a TLR7 agonist enhances safety and promotes colocalization with Leishmania‐infected macrophages in skin lesions, enabling a ∼2‐log reduction in parasite burden. However, tissue‐level constraints and TLR‐driven regulatory feedback generate a mixed immune response that limits complete parasite clearance.
