Zinc protoporphyrin and protoporphyrin free acid in blood were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography on a C18 column. Results for 63 human blood samples obtained through a lead poisoning detection program compared favorably with the widely-used ethyl acetate--acetic acid extraction determination.

Zinc protoporphyrin as an indicator of lead exposure: precision of zinc protoporphyrin measurements
International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, 1987In lead-exposed workers many factors affect the relationship between the levels of lead and of zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) in blood. When the zinc protoporphyrin level is used to assess the lead in the blood level, the analytical accuracy of the ZPP and the PbB determinations should be known.

Zinc Protoporphyrin, Zinc Ion, and Protoporphyrin Reduce Focal Cerebral Ischemia
Stroke, 1996Background and PurposeZinc protoporphyrin pretreatment protects against temporary focal ischemic brain injury in rats. However, it is not known whether the zinc or the protoporphyrin portion of zinc protoporphyrin has effects on focal cerebral ischemia. Hence, all three agents were compared with regard to infarct size and edema in a rat model of middle
