Diversity of the Microbiomes in the Larval and Adult Stages of the European Cherry Fruit Fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) and Identification of Potential Biocontrol Candidate Taxa

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
First comprehensive characterization of the R. cerasi microbiome is reported. Stage‐specific variations in microbial composition are documented. Multiple bacterial entomopathogen taxa are identified as potential biocontrol candidates for R. cerasi.

Asymptomatic Plasmodium Infections in Children in Low Malaria Transmission Setting, Southwestern Uganda

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2016
A survey of asymptomatic children in Uganda showed Plasmodium malariae and P. falciparum parasites in 45% and 55% of microscopy-positive samples, respectively. Although 36% of microscopy-positive samples were negative by rapid diagnostic test, 75% showed

Surgical management of recurrent oesophageal obstruction in a yearling Saddlebred filly

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary This case report describes the diagnostic approach and surgical management of a yearling Saddlebred filly with recurrent oesophageal obstruction, likely caused by an acquired extraluminal oesophageal stricture. The filly initially presented with repeated episodes of oesophageal obstruction, which were resolved with sedation and nasogastric ...

Opportunistic protozoan parasitic infections of gastrointestinal tract

open access: yes, 2000
Opportunistic infections of the gastrointestinal tract have played a critical role in determining symptomatic illness in immunocompromised individuals. Protozoan parasites that cause mild or self-limited disease in immunocompetent individuals can cause ...

Transgenic selection and underlying mechanisms in apicomplexan parasites

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Transgenic selection markers have driven genetic engineering in apicomplexans, enabling precise, iterative experiments. This review discusses mechanistic details of drug selection markers, strategies for marker recycling, and practical considerations for several clinically relevant parasites.

Cytosolic delivery of bacterial metabolites by riboflavin transporters promotes MR1 antigen presentation and MAIT cell recognition

open access: yesImmunology &Cell Biology, EarlyView.
VitBAg antigen presentation is promoted through a cytosolic pathway that reaches ligand‐receptive MR1 to present to MAIT cells, like the riboflavin transport pathway. Riboflavin solute carrier transporters can promote this MR1 presentation, but they are not essential for this role, suggesting redundant pathways to uptake VitBAg.

Prevalences and trends of human oral protozoan parasites

open access: yesOrapuh Journal, 2020
Protozoan parasites are microscopic, unicellular organisms, of a group of phyla of the kingdom Protista, that can be free-living or parasitic. These organisms can live, and reproduce their kind, in human tissues.

Vectors and Vector‐Borne Diseases: Biology, Epidemiology and Integrated Control Strategies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Vector‐Borne Diseases (VBDs), transmitted by arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and sandflies, represent a significant threat to global health. These diseases can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths.

Integrative Approaches to Understand the Mastery in Manipulation of Host Cytokine Networks by Protozoan Parasites with Emphasis on Plasmodium and Leishmania Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Diseases by protozoan pathogens pose a significant public health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries, where these are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality.
