BMJ, 2018A 34 year old woman presented with a 9 day history of progressive proximal bilateral limb weakness and mild dysphagia with fluids. On examination, she had a peri-orbital rash (fig 1). Five cases histories are reviewed here in which Duchenne muscular dystrophy had been mistakenly diagnosed 3 to 12 years previously and the correct diagnosis was made only after repeat muscle biopsy or biopsy review.

Chronic Renal Failure Presenting as Proximal Muscle Weakness in a Child
Journal of Child Neurology, 1986A 13-year old boy presented with a three-year history of slowly progressive proximal muscle weakness, particularly involving the lower extremities. Chronic renal failure was uncovered in the course of his evaluation. Urologic investigation showed small and poorly functioning kidneys with a BUN of 118 mg/dL and a creatinine of 10.7 mg/dL.
