The ADT proximity and text proximity problems

6th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval. 5th International Workshop on Groupware (Cat. No.PR00268), 2003
Practical text proximity problems lead to the abstract data type proximity that handles close points in the plane. Different variants and implementations of proximity are proposed and tight-complexity bounds based on information theory are derived. This problem is related to evaluating Boolean queries in large text retrieval (as in Web search engines ...

Proximal hypospadias

Urologic Clinics of North America, 2002
Approximately 20% of hypospadiac urethras are located proximally, anywhere from the penoscrotal to the perineal region. Repair of proximal defects is still one of the most challenging surgical procedures facing the hypospadiologist. Modifications of current techniques for the correction of proximal hypospadias as well as new innovative techniques ...

Proximal Nephron

Comprehensive Physiology, 2013
Abstract The kidney plays a fundamental role in maintaining body salt and fluid balance and blood pressure homeostasis through the actions of its proximal and distal tubular segments of nephrons. However, proximal tubules are well recognized to exert a more prominent role than distal counterparts. Proximal tubules

Proximity as a service

2012 2nd Baltic Congress on Future Internet Communications, 2012
This paper describes a new possible model for distributing hyper-local data across subscribers. This new model uses Wi-Fi proximity approach as a service. According to this concept, any exiting or even especially created Wi-Fi hot spot could be used as presence sensor that can trigger access for some user-generated information snippets.

Learning in proximity

IEEE 10th International Conference on Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing (ICCI-CC'11), 2011
In most articles about machine learning, particularly in reinforcement learning, a learning system interacts with an unknown environment and tries to improve its performance (receiving fewer penalties) according to feedback from environment as reinforcement signals. In this paper we show how a learning system can learn to interact with environment from

Proximal Algorithms

Foundations and Trends® in Optimization, 2014
This monograph is about a class of optimization algorithms called proximal algorithms. Much like Newton’s method is a standard tool for solving unconstrained smooth optimization problems of modest size, proximal algorithms can be viewed as an analogous tool for nonsmooth, constrained, large-scale, or distributed versions of these problems.

Proximal connectedness

Fundam. Informaticae, 2005
In this paper the authors investigate a notion of connectedness suited to apartness spaces. The theory of apartness spaces is an ongoing development by the same authors, and seems to provide a straightforward framework for doing topology constructively.

Distance and proximity

Neohelicon, 2010
In order for the value structure of a given culture to be established, a number of its constituents have to be pushed beyond its boundary by shaping an abhorring figure of its Other. The exteriorization of such a figure is a necessary operation of any identity formation.

On Proximity-Oblivious Testing

SIAM Journal on Computing, 2009
We initiate a systematic study of a special type of property testers. These testers consist of repeating a basic test for a number of times that depends on the proximity parameter, whereas the basic test is oblivious of the proximity parameter. We refer to such basic tests by the term Proximity-Oblivious Testers.
