Roman pottery: models, proxies and economic interpretation
Journal of Roman Archaeology, 2005This paper looks at the historiography of attempts to extract economic information from ceramics. Theoretical problems involved in model-building exercises and arguments from proxy evidence are highlighted. Recent volumes of Britannia and Journal of Roman Archaeology are then examined to explore the range of current interpretations. The paper concludes

This chapter focuses on Katarina Kušić's research on conflict-affected communities in Myanmar. It analyzes travel restrictions for foreigners that are put in place by the host country of the research. It also emphasizes how the help of local associates overcome the physical distance created by a controlling state and provide advantages in terms of ...

Using Complementary Drought Proxies Improves Interpretations of Fire Histories in Montane Forests
Tree-Ring Research, 2020To investigate drought influences on mixed-severity fire regimes in montane forests of southeastern British Columbia, we developed a Douglas-fir latewood-width chronology and tested its associations with drought records across the fire season. Associations were strong between drought and latewood-widths particularly for June–August.

In modeling chemical attributes using hyperspectral data, nonlinear relationships between the predictor and the response are frequent. The common nonlinear modeling techniques improve prediction accuracy but suffer from low interpretability of the models.

Interpreting High-Resolution Proxy Climate Data — The Example of Dendroclimatology
1995Current scientific concern to establish the reality, the nature and the speed of climate changes, believed by many to be the inevitable consequence of human activities, should serve to reinforce our determination to understand similar details of the “natural” (i.e. non-anthropogenic) variability of climate.

In the context of this paper, stable isotopic proxies are those preserving directly, or via known or calculable fractionation factors, a record of 18O/16O and/or 2H/1H in the water which contributed to their growth. Suitable proxies include amongst others tree-ring cellulose, bone phosphate, lake sediment minerals and speleothem fluid inclusions.

The Interpretation of Unit Value Indices - Unit Value Indices as Proxies for Price Indices [PDF]
The unit value index (UVI) as compiled in Germany for exports and imports is compared with two other indices, viz. an index of Drobisch which unfortunately is likewise known as "unit value index" and the "normal" Laspeyres price index (PI) of exports and imports.
