Roman pottery: models, proxies and economic interpretation

Journal of Roman Archaeology, 2005
This paper looks at the historiography of attempts to extract economic information from ceramics. Theoretical problems involved in model-building exercises and arguments from proxy evidence are highlighted. Recent volumes of Britannia and Journal of Roman Archaeology are then examined to explore the range of current interpretations. The paper concludes

Interpretation of pronouns in proxy counterfactuals

2016
This thesis focuses on the interpretation of pronouns, in particular as subjects of the consequent clauses of counterfactual conditionals. More specifically, the constructions under consideration have been termed proxy counterfactuals. They are characterized as identifying two individual-denoting expressions in such a way that a new, composite ...

Interpretation by Proxy? Interpretive Fieldwork with Local Associates in Areas of Restricted Research Access

2020
This chapter focuses on Katarina Kušić's research on conflict-affected communities in Myanmar. It analyzes travel restrictions for foreigners that are put in place by the host country of the research. It also emphasizes how the help of local associates overcome the physical distance created by a controlling state and provide advantages in terms of ...

Interpreting Common Stock Returns around Proxy Statement Disclosures and Annual Shareholder Meetings

The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, 1986
Numerous studies have analyzed the stock market reaction to information released in proxy statements. Two possible biases in proxy statement research are suggested frequently: misspecification of the return benchmark and a sample selection bias from analyzing only “clean” events.

Isotopic behavior during the aragonite-calcite transition: Implications for sample preparation and proxy interpretation

Chemical Geology, 2016
Abstract At the Earth's surface, aragonite, a polymorph of calcium carbonate, is thermodynamically unstable, and readily converts to calcite, a process accelerated by heating and mechanical stress. This study has investigated the behavior of the 13C/12C, 18O/16O ratios, and the clumped isotope temperature proxy (∆47) during this mineral transition ...

Interpreting parental proxy reports of (health-related) quality of life for children with unilateral cochlear implants

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 2007
To examine what factors are associated with EuroQol EQ-5D scores in children after unilateral cochlear implantation and to explore parental conceptualisations of health-related quality of life (HRQL) and quality of life (QoL).Face to face interviews were conducted with the parents of 222 implanted children, in an attempt to elicit information on their ...

The inversion of aragonite to calcite during the sampling of skeletal archives: Implications for proxy interpretation

Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, 2015
Rationale Understanding changes in Earth's oceans and climate requires the reliable application of paleo‐proxies. However, inconsistencies between individual δ 18 O records within biogenic specimens commonly have significant impacts on ...

Interpreting High-Resolution Proxy Climate Data — The Example of Dendroclimatology

1995
Current scientific concern to establish the reality, the nature and the speed of climate changes, believed by many to be the inevitable consequence of human activities, should serve to reinforce our determination to understand similar details of the “natural” (i.e. non-anthropogenic) variability of climate.

Hydrological factors in the interpretation of stable isotopic proxy data present and past: a European perspective

Quaternary Science Reviews, 2004
In the context of this paper, stable isotopic proxies are those preserving directly, or via known or calculable fractionation factors, a record of 18O/16O and/or 2H/1H in the water which contributed to their growth. Suitable proxies include amongst others tree-ring cellulose, bone phosphate, lake sediment minerals and speleothem fluid inclusions.
