Stability of pulegone and thujone in ethanolic solution

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1990
The study aims to obtain information about the safety of essential oils from mint or sage. The stability of the monoterpene ketones (R)-(+) pulegone and alpha- and beta-thujone in aqueous-ethanolic solutions was measured by using a model experimental system.

Metabolism of a monoterpene ketone, R-(+)-pulegone—a hepatotoxin in rat

Xenobiotica, 1989
1. R-(+)-Pulegone was administered orally to rats and the urinary metabolites were investigated. Six metabolites were isolated and purified using column and thin layer chromatographic techniques. Metabolites were identified by i.r., n.m.r. and mass spectral analyses. 2. The neutral metabolites isolated from urine of rats treated with pulegone (I) were:

Inhibition of acetylcholinesterases by pulegone-1,2-epoxide

Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology, 1985
Abstract Toxicological observations indicate that pulegone-1,2-epoxide, isolated from the medicinal plant, poleo (Lippia stoechadifolia), is an insect neurotoxin. These observations prompted studies of the action of pulegone-1,2-epoxide on acetylcholinesterase activity.

The Metabolism of (R)-(+)-Pulegone, a Toxic Monoterpene

1992
(R)-(+)-Pulegone is a major monoterpene constituent of pennyroyal oil, a mint oil obtained from the leaves of plants Mentha pulegiwn or Hedeoma pulegoides (1). Pennyroyal oil is widely used as a fragrance and flavoring agent (2), and has been used, based on folklore, as a herbal medicine to control menses and terminate pregnancy (3).

Biological activities of pulegone

1998
High antibacterial and antifungal activity of pulegone has been confirmed by broth dilution method. It has also been found that pulegone has short-term stimulating effect on diuresis in rats.
