Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...

Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

The pathophysiology of fluid removal during haemodialysis: implications for blood volume monitoring and determination of dry weight. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The aim of the research was to characterise the pathophysiology of ultrafiltration (UF) during haemodialysis (HD) using a range of assessment tools. The hypothesis was that objective monitoring would facilitate accurate estimation of dry weight (DW) and ...

Organoid Brain‐Machine‐Interface Devices for Central Nervous System Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We envision organoid brain‐machine‐interface (Organoid‐BMI) devices as new biohybrid bidirectional communication pathways to connect the human CNS and the external world for personalized CNS repair and regeneration. ABSTRACT Central nervous system (CNS) repair and regeneration suffer from tremendous clinical challenges due to current limitations in ...

Rewiring Pyroptosis to Potentiate Cancer Immunotherapy via a Gasdermin D Agonist Bypassing Caspase‐3

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work introduces a small‐molecule agonist, DIBDO, that bypasses Casp‐3 to directly trigger GSDMD‐mediated pyroptosis in tumors. Activated by glutathione, DIBDO generates singlet oxygen and molecular iodine, blocking Casp‐3 pathways and inducing immunogenic cell death.

Pulmonary vascular volume, impaired left ventricular filling and dyspnea: The MESA Lung Study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
BackgroundEvaluation of impaired left ventricular (LV) filling has focused on intrinsic causes of LV dysfunction; however, pulmonary vascular changes may contribute to reduced LV filling and dyspnea.

Possible role of pulmonary blood volume in chronic hypoxic pulmonary hypertension

open access: yes, 1993
Chronic hypoxia increases the total blood volume (TBV) and pulmonary arterial blood pressure (Ppa) and induces pulmonary vascular remodeling. The present study was undertaken to assess how the pulmonary blood volume (PBV) changes during hypoxia and the ...
