Validation of a Genetic Risk Score Combined With Clinical Variables for Predicting Pulmonary Fibrosis in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a severe extra‐articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study aimed to externally validate a genetic risk score (GRS) and a combined risk score (CRS) for predicting the risk of RA‐associated PF in an independent cohort of patients with early RA.

Patterns of recruitment and injury in a heterogeneous airway network model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In respiratory distress, lung airways become flooded with liquid and may collapse due to surface-tension forces acting on air-liquid interfaces, inhibiting gas exchange.

COVID‐19 Vaccination is not Associated with the Development of Idiopathic Inflammatory Myositis in U.S. Veterans

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective Several case reports have proposed a potential association between COVID‐19 vaccination and the subsequent development of idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM). This study examined prior COVID‐19 vaccination in US Veterans who developed new‐onset IIM compared to those without new‐onset IIM.

Phase I, randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled studies to evaluate the safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of an investigational non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) protein vaccine in adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a major cause of various respiratory diseases. The development of an effective vaccine against NTHi mandates new approaches beyond conjugated vaccines as this opportunistic bacterium is non ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

PRELIVE: A Framework for Predicting Lipid Nanoparticles In Vivo Efficacy and Reducing Reliance on Animal Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
PREdicting LNP In Vivo Efficacy (PRELIVE) framework enables the prediction of lipid nanoparticle (LNPs) organ‐specific delivery through dual modeling approaches. Composition‐based models using formulation parameters and protein corona‐based models using biological fingerprints both achieve high predictive accuracy across multiple organs.

Tuberculosis and the Power of the State: Toward the Development of Rational Standards for the Review of Compulsory Public Health Powers [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
This article uses tuberculosis as the paradigm for exploring rational standards for the exercise of compulsory public health powers. Extant doctrine in disability and constitutional law provides a lens for examining judicial review of state interventions.

Cell Calcification Models and Their Implications for Medicine and Biomaterial Research

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Calcification, is the process by which the tissues containing minerals are formed, occurring during normal physiological processes, or in pathological conditions. Here, it is aimed to give a comprehensive overview of the range of cell models available, and the approaches taken by these models, highlighting when and how methodological divergences arise,
