Muscle Mitochondrial Respiration and Cardiorespiratory Fitness Contribute to Slower Walking Speed of Older Individuals Who Identify as Black

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
While the etiology of race differences in mobility is multifactorial, our data indicate that muscle mitochondrial respiration and cardiorespiratory fitness may contribute to the slower walking speed of individuals who identify as Black compared to White.

High‐velocity nasal insufflation versus noninvasive positive pressure ventilation for moderate acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the emergency department: A randomized clinical trial

open access: yesAcademic Emergency Medicine, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 403-413, April 2025.
Abstract Background Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the emergency department (ED) involve dyspnea, cough, and chest discomfort; frequent exacerbations are associated with increased mortality and reduced quality of life. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NiPPV) is commonly used to help relieve symptoms but

Disentangling the effects of nicotine versus non‐nicotine constituents of tobacco smoke on major depressive disorder: A multivariable Mendelian randomisation study

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 120, Issue 6, Page 1240-1252, June 2025.
Abstract Background and aims There is growing evidence that tobacco smoking causes depression, but it is unclear which constituents of tobacco smoke (e.g. nicotine, carbon monoxide) may be responsible. We used Mendelian randomisation (MR) to measure the independent effect of nicotine on depression, by adjusting the effect of circulating nicotine ...

Rare but relevant: The injection of tablet preparations and pulmonary hypertension

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 120, Issue 6, Page 1276-1279, June 2025.
Abstract Intravascular injection of dissolved medicinal preparations such as crushed tablets is associated with a risk of injecting particulate material into the vasculature. This particulate material will naturally pass to the lungs where it will be largely filtered out in the pulmonary vascular bed, and in turn, it can result in a range of ...
