The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2015Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by a rare pathogen most commonly affecting immunocompromised hosts. Successful treatment of pulmonary mucormycosis requires rapid diagnosis, reversal of predisposing factors, aggressive surgical excision, and antifungal therapy.

American Journal of Roentgenology, 1973Patients with leukemia or diabetes mellitus are especially predisposed to pulmonary mucormycosis.The lack of pleural effusion, and peripheral lung involvement, inhomogeneous densities, and consolidations with cavitations on the chest roentgenogram are suggestive of fungal infection.

Pulmonary Mucormycosis: Another Cure
Chest, 1977Pulmonary mucormycosis in an ill patient with poorly controlled chronic lymphocytic leukemia was diagnosed with open lung biopsy without excision. He improved on medical management and became ambulatory. At autopsy one year later, no residual mucormycosis was present.
