Pulmonary Surfactant Function in Alveoli and Conducting Airways
Surface tension plays a very important role in aeration of the neonate's lungs. Pulmonary surfactant, which is inadequate in the premature infant, modifies surface tension during the act of breathing and is necessary for maintenance of alveolar stability.

Investigating the suitability of high content image analysis as a tool to assess the reversibility of foamy alveolar macrophage phenotypes in vitro. [PDF]
Many potential inhaled medicines fail during development due to the induction of a highly vacuolated or “foamy” alveolar macrophage phenotype response in pre-clinical studies.

Long-chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency as a Cause of Pulmonary Surfactant Dysfunction*
Background: The contribution of long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCAD) to human fatty acid oxidation is not understood. Results: LCAD localizes to lung alveolar type II cells, which produce pulmonary surfactant; LCAD-deficient mice have surfactant ...

The Space Within: How Architected Voids Promote Tissue Formation
This review explores the role of void spaces in tissue engineering scaffolds and examines four key methods for introducing porosity into hydrogels at different scales. It discusses sacrificial templating, microgels, phase separation, and 3D printing, highlighting principles, advantages, and limitations. It also addresses emerging strategies integrating

Tracheal suctioning improves gas exchange but not hemodynamics in asphyxiated lambs with meconium aspiration. [PDF]
BackgroundCurrent neonatal resuscitation guidelines recommend tracheal suctioning of nonvigorous neonates born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid.MethodsWe evaluated the effect of tracheal suctioning at birth in 29 lambs with asphyxia induced by ...

Bacteria‐Responsive Nanostructured Drug Delivery Systems for Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy
Bacteria‐responsive nanocarriers are designed to release antimicrobials only in the presence of infection‐specific cues. This selective activation ensures drug release precisely at the site of infection, avoiding premature or indiscriminate release, and enhancing efficacy.

Effect of Surfactant and Budesonide on the Pulmonary Distribution of Fluorescent Dye in Mice
Surfactant is a useful vehicle for the intratracheal delivery of medicine to the distal lung. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of intratracheal surfactant and budesonide instillation on the pulmonary distribution of fluorescent dye in mice.

Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy in Bionanotechnology: Current Advances and Future Perspectives
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) enables the nanoscale mapping of electrostatic surface potentials. While widely applied in materials science, its use in biological systems remains emerging. This review presents recent advances in KPFM applied to biological samples and provides a critical perspective on current limitations and future directions for
