Rethinking Perioperative Corticosteroids in Esophageal Cancer Surgery: Evidence From an Integrative Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Esophagectomy remains a highly invasive procedure associated with substantial postoperative morbidity. Pulmonary complications, anastomotic leakage, and in‐hospital mortality are of particular concern. Perioperative corticosteroids are often administered to attenuate excessive inflammatory responses; however, the clinical impact in ...

Prevalence and risk factors for obstructive pulmonary dysfunction caused by silica dust exposure: a multicenter cross-sectional study

open access: yesBMC Pulmonary Medicine
Objective To understand the prevalence rate of obstructive pulmonary dysfunction in workers exposed to silica dust and analyze its risk factors, so as to provide reference for the formulation of diagnostic criteria for chronic obstructive pulmonary ...

Regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with a laryngeal tube: A pilot crossover human cadaver study.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
BACKGROUND:High-quality chest compressions are imperative for Cardio-Pulmonary-Resuscitation (CPR). International CPR guidelines advocate, that chest compressions should not be interrupted for ventilation once a patient's trachea is intubated or a ...

Pulmonary ventilation teaching aid

open access: yesAdvances in Physiology Education, 2003
[Reprinted with permission from HAPS-EDucator, a publication of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society ( )] The biomechanical properties of the lungs and chest wall play an important role in ventilation.

Pulmonary ventilation and perfusion assessed by electrical impedance tomography - Experimental studies in pigs

open access: yes, 2009
Pulmonary ventilation and perfusion and ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) matching determine gas exchange in every lung unit in the healthy state and in the pathologically altered lung. Mismatch of V and Q lead to hypoxaemia and hypercapnia and monitoring of V/

Risks and Benefits of Feeding Enterostomy Creation During Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: A Propensity‐Weighted Analysis Using the Japanese National Clinical Database

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Feeding enterostomy during MIE was evaluated in 19 054 patients from the Japanese NCD using propensity weighting. Enterostomy was associated with higher reoperation and respiratory complications, but lower delayed gastric emptying and deep vein thrombosis, with no significant difference in overall bowel obstruction.

A novel alveolar Krebs cycle-triggered CO2 sensing mechanism regulates regional pulmonary ventilation.

open access: yes, 2011
Pulmonary perfusion disorders provoke atelectasis in order to minimize ventilation/perfusion mismatch. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

Exercise response and the effect of supplemental oxygen during interval training on O2 uptake kinetics, blood lactate levels, and endurance performance in patients with mild, moderate and severe cystic fibrosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Exercise performance is reduced in individuals with moderate to severe cystic fibrosis (CF). A ventilatory mechanical limitation, arterial hypoxemia, cardiovascular abnormalities, alteration in O2 uptake kinetics and reduced muscle ...

Equipment for noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

open access: yes, 2023
Noninvasive ventilation consists of the application of a ventilator to the patient’s airways without recourse to orotracheal intubation or tracheostomy and therefore requires a range of devices that guarantee mechanical ventilatory support to the ...
