Pulse-Amplitude Modulation

2004
An information-bearing signal must conform to the limitations of its channel. While the bit streams we wish to transmit are inherently discrete-time, all physical media are continuous-time in nature. Hence, we need to represent the bit stream as a continuous-time signal for transmission, a process called ...

Population transfer by an amplitude-modulated pulse

Physical Review A, 2003
We propose a technique for coherent population inversion of a two-state system, which uses an amplitude-modulated pulse. In the modulation-free adiabatic basis, the modulation introduces oscillating interaction between the adiabatic states. In a second rotating-wave approximation picture, this oscillating interaction induces a pair of level crossings ...

Amplitude Modulated Heat Pulses

1984
The generation of acoustic phonons by a metal heater evaporated on a crystal has found a wide range of applications since the original work of von Gutfeld and Nethercot [1]. In dielectric crystals with a sufficiently low number of dislocations and impurities a ballistic propagation of acoustic phonons of all modes can be observed. Thereby the heater is

A CMOS pulse-width modulator/pulse-amplitude modulator for four-quadrant analog multipliers

IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 1992
A CMOS pulse-width modulator/pulse-amplitude modulator (PWM/PAM) has been designed using the Tomota-Sugiyama-Yamaguchi principle. The PWM/PAM has been used to build a four-quadrant analog multiplier (4-QAM) with a DC transfer function that depends only on resistor matching and on the value of a reference voltage. The PWM/PAM circuit was fabricated in a

Supply-Modulated Radar Transmitters With Amplitude-Modulated Pulses

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2015
This paper introduces an efficient radar transmitter with improved spectral confinement, enabled by a pulse waveform that contains both amplitude and frequency modulation. The theoretical behavior of the Class-B power amplifier (PA) under a Gaussian envelope is compared to that of a Class-A PA.

Long-pulse, amplitude-modulated optical parametric oscillator

Applied Optics, 1996
A singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled LiNbO(3) is pumped by a Nd:YAG-based oscillator-modulator-amplifier source. This pump source, operating at 1.064 μm, provides the ability to control the temporal characteristics of the OPO waveform.

Pulse Amplitude and Frequency Modulation of Parathyroid Hormone in Plasma*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1989
Inconclusive reports on pulsatile secretion of PTH in man have been published. In this study PTH was measured by intact and PTH-(44-68) assays. Central venous blood sampling was performed every 2 min in 10 healthy men between 6-9 h and in 3 male patients with osteoporosis for over 6 h. Pulsatile PTH secretion was identified for healthy men and controls.

A Class of Distribution-Free Detectors for Pulse Amplitude Modulated Signals

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1979
A class of distribution-free detectors for M -ary pulse amplitude modulated digital signals in the presence of certain signal dependent interference and additive noise of unknown distribution is formulated, evaluated in terms of probability of error and compared to a matched filter detector in Gaussian noise.

Phase and Amplitude Modulator for Microwave Pulse Generation

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2011
We present a microwave amplitude/phase modulation device based on superconducting resonator and synthetic transmission line technology. The primary benefits of this device are agile frequency response for modulation over a 2 GHz bandwidth, low power dissipation and potential for integration with superconducting qubits and high-speed SFQ logic.

Stereophonic Broadcasting Using Pulse-Amplitude Modulation

IRE Transactions on Broadcasting, 1960
For transmission of the two stereo signals of a stereophonic radio broadcast, a time multiplex method operating with pulse amplitude modulation is proposed. The transmitting principle is described. The questions of compatibility, transmitter excitation, baseband width and radio band width, signal-to-noise ratio for single-channel and stereo reception ...
