A Complete Analysis for Pump Controlled Single Rod Actuators

open access: yes, 2016
In the current study a variable speed pump controlled hydrostatic circuit where an underlapped shuttle valve is utilized to compensate the unequal flow rate of a single rod actuator is analyzed. Parameters of the shuttle valve are included in the system analysis, rather than treating it as an ideal switching element as handled in literature.

Molecular biology on a microfluidic chip [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We have developed microfluidic chips for automating molecular biology processes such as gene ligation and gene transformation from nanolitre sample volumes with parallel architecture. Unlike conventional tube methods with cumbersome pipetting procedures,

Energy management in pump-controlled actuators

open access: yesFrontiers in Mechanical Engineering
Pump-controlled actuators, or more generically, hydrostatic actuators, have the significant advantage of not relying on valves to control the cylinders. This results in much better energy usage compared to traditional valve-controlled systems. However, it is possible to further increase energy efficiency by storing load energy in motoring quadrants and

Freeform Fabrication of Ionomeric Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Ionomeric polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators are a type of soft electromechanically active material which offers large displacement, rapid motion with only ~1V stimulus.

A Class of Energy Efficient Self-Contained Electro-Hydraulic Drives with Self-Locking Capability

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Pump controlled and self-contained electro-hydraulic cylinder drives may improve energy efficiency and reduce installation space compared to conventional valve solutions, while being in line with the trend of electrification.

Charge pump controller for grounded piezoelectric actuators used in precise positioning

open access: yesElectronics Letters, 2011
A charge pump controller adapted for grounded piezoelectric loads is proposed. By transferring charge packets into the piezoelectric actuator step by step, the actuator deforms with much less hysteresis and ultra-high resolution. Compared with voltage drive, the actuator hysteresis is reduced by 71-83- over a frequency range of 0.01-0.1-Hz.

Control and ultrasonic actuation of a gas-liquid interface in a microfluidic chip

open access: yes, 2009
This article describes the design and manufacturing of a microfluidic chip, allowing for the actuation of a gas-liquid interface and of the neighboring fluid. A first way to control the interface motion is to apply a pressure difference across it.

Experimental Study on Fast and Energy-Efficient Direct Driven Hydraulic Actuator Unit

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
In this experimental study, a Direct Driven Hydraulics (DDH) system of the closed circuit type was utilized for cyclic vertical actuation in heavy load material handling. The actuator was controlled by a speed-controlled fixed displacement pump. The high

A Singular Perturbation Theory-Based Composite Control Design for a Pump-Controlled Hydraulic Actuator with Position Tracking Error Constraint

open access: yesActuators, 2023
Pump-controlled hydraulic actuators (PHAs) contain slow mechanical and fast hydraulic dynamics, and thus singular perturbation theory can be adopted in the control strategies of PHAs. In this article, we develop a singular perturbation theory-based composite control approach for a PHA with position tracking error constraint. Disturbance observers (DOBs)

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve
