Study on rotor–stator interaction in a pump-jet propulsor based on dynamic mode decomposition

Physics of Fluids
For a pre-swirl pump-jet propulsor (PJP), the stator inevitably induces the problem of rotor–stator interaction (RSI). In this paper, the mechanism of RSI in a PJP is analyzed through dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). The coherent flow structures and corresponding frequencies have been decomposed and analyzed.

Entropy generation analysis of flow fields around a pump-jet propulsor mounted on SUBOFF

Physics of Fluids
A submarine's hydrodynamic performance is critical, as it directly influences its stealth, maneuverability, and endurance. A numerical investigation is conducted on a SUBOFF model equipped with a pump-jet propulsor (PJP) under varying inflow velocities. The numerical results demonstrate strong agreement with those reported by Posa et al.

Sources and mechanisms of flow loss and hydroacoustics in a pre-swirl stator pump-jet propulsor

Physics of Fluids
Accurately identifying sources of flow loss and hydroacoustics and clarifying the mechanism of their generation are crucial for directing the optimal design of efficient and quiet pump-jet propulsors (PJPs). In this paper, numerical simulations of steady and unsteady flow are performed for a PJP equipped with pre-swirl stationary vanes, based on which ...

Effect of leading edge tubercles bionic blade of high speed pump jet propulsor on cavitation suppression

Physics of Fluids
The occurrence of cavitation in hydraulic machinery is a matter of significant concern, as it presents a substantial risk to the reliable functioning of pump jet propulsors. The point of this study is to find out how well bionic blades with different kinds of leading edge (LE) tubercles distribution stop cavitation in high-speed pump jet propulsors ...

Cavitation evolution and radiation noise of a pre-swirl pump-jet propulsor in oblique flow

Physics of Fluids
During the submarine's surfacing process, the rotor of the pump-jet propulsor (PJP) is subjected to nonuniform hydrodynamic loads and cavitation, inducing cavitation-induced noise. In this paper, the hybrid Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes/Large Eddy Simulation method, the Schnerr–Sauer model and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings equations are adopted to explore

Effects of propeller boss cap fins on hydrodynamics and flow noise of a pump-jet propulsor

Physics of Fluids
As an underwater thruster, the pump-jet propulsor (PJP) exhibits low radiation noise but generates significant line spectral noise in the low-frequency band. In this paper, we equipped the PJP hub with two types of propeller boss cap fins (PBCF): one fixed and the other rotating with the rotor.
