Although the IMO mandates IS Code Part A to build and operate ships, ship safety is not guaranteed due to the problem of dynamic stability. So, IMO prepared the second-generation stability standard with five modes. However, since the software supporting the second-generation stability calculation is insufficient, CAD-based stability calculation SW that

Case studies of SGISC Operational Limitations for pure loss of stability and excessive acceleration
2021The present paper reports an application of Operational Limitations related to route and to maximum significant wave height, on two case studies, a Ro-Ro cargo and a bulk carrier. The ships have been found vulnerable to Level 2 for pure loss of stability and excessive acceleration, respectively.

Loss of plane form equilibrium stability during pure “edgewise” bending of a strip
Journal of Machinery Manufacture and Reliability, 2008The problem of curved strip pure bending under a two-dimensional stress has been considered. The values of stresses, the bending moment, and the curvature radius of the stress rupture surface have been obtained. Hoopential uniform compressive stresses causing the loss of the plane form equilibrium stability of the deformable strip act in the region ...

An Overview of Vulnerability Criteria for Pure Loss of Stability
2022This paper presents the current state of development of the second generation of intact stability criteria based on pure loss of stability. The concept of a multi-tiered evaluation process is based on the physics of the stability failures addressing the interaction between hull and waves in a seaway condition.

Surf-Riding-Broaching and Pure Loss of Stability vulnerability on Systematic Series D1 Model
2018The development of the IMO second generation intact stability criteria is based on a multi-level approach. In each level the accuracy of the analysis is increased and if a possible vulnerability is detected the next level is applied. A ship, depending on its characteristics and external conditions, may be considered vulnerable to one or more stability ...

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued guidelines for direct stability assessment, recognizing pure loss of stability as a failure mode leading to large roll motions or capsizing in large waves. This paper uses the CFD solver STAR-CCM+ to simulate pure loss of stability for ONR Tumblehome in stern-quartering waves.
