Probing single cells of purple sulfur bacteria with Raman spectroscopy: carotenoids and elemental sulfur [PDF]
We explored the use of Raman spectroscopy to simultaneously monitor the presence of different biomarkers (carotenoids, elemental sulfur) within single cells of the purple sulfur photosynthetic bacteria Allochromatium vinosum and A. warmingii. Raman microspectrometry using excitation at 532 nm allowed the detection of different carotenoids.

Detection of Purple Sulfur Bacteria in Purple and Non-purple Dairy Wastewaters [PDF]
The presence of purple bacteria in manure storage lagoons is often associated with reduced odors. In this study, our objectives were to determine the occurrence of purple sulfur bacteria (PSB) in seven dairy wastewater lagoons and to identify possible linkages between wastewater properties and purple blooms.

Synthesis of High-Molecular-Weight Polyhydroxyalkanoates by Marine Photosynthetic Purple Bacteria. [PDF]
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a biopolyester/bioplastic that is produced by a variety of microorganisms to store carbon and increase reducing redox potential.

Molecular Physiology of Anaerobic Phototrophic Purple and Green Sulfur Bacteria [PDF]
There are two main types of bacterial photosynthesis: oxygenic (cyanobacteria) and anoxygenic (sulfur and non-sulfur phototrophs). Molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis in the phototrophic microorganisms can differ and depend on their location and pigments in the cells.

Acetate metabolism in purple non-sulfur bacteria [PDF]
The photosynthetic non-sulfur purple bacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus E1F1 can grow on acetate or dl-malate photoheterotrophically under anerobic conditions or chemoheterotrophically in the dark in the presence of dioxygen. Bacterial cells grown under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions exhibited high amounts of the tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes ...

Viruses of sulfur oxidizing phototrophs encode genes for pigment, carbon, and sulfur metabolisms
Viral infections modulate bacterial metabolism and ecology. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that viruses influence the ecology of purple and green sulfur bacteria in anoxic and sulfidic lakes, analogs of euxinic oceans in the geologic past.

Vertical structure of the bacterial diversity in meromictic Fayetteville Green Lake
The permanently stratified water columns in euxinic meromictic lakes produce niche environments for phototrophic sulfur oxidizers and diverse sulfur metabolisms.

Phototrophic sulfur bacteria in the chemocline of Lake Cadagno, Switzerland, were dominated by purple sulfur bacteria before 1998, but their composition shifted after a presumed disturbance to consist of mainly green sulfur bacteria.
