Improving 410NiMo weld metal toughness by PWHT

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2011
Abstract Highlights of the present study is the importance of choosing suitable temperatures for two stage PWHT to achieve desirable toughness in the weld metals produced by ER 410NiMo filler wire. Weld pads prepared using this filler wire was used for extensive metallurgical characterization of the weld metal.

Challenging weld repair of grade 91 tubing by avoiding PWHT

Energy Materials, 2009
AbstractGrade 91 pipes and tubes have become standard materials for the design of new and refurbishment of existing power plants. Several major failures have been encountered after fabrication of these new creep strength enhanced steels and are mainly attributable to improper practices.

Simultaneously improved the strength dramatically and eliminated HAZ softening of DP980 steel pulsed-arc welding joints by PWHT [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Science & Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing, 2022
A pathway of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to eliminate heat affected zone (HAZ) softening and improve the strength of the welded joints of DP980 steel was developed. It is found that the high temperature isothermal transition at 750–950 °C followed by

TBW technique by varying weld polarities in SMAW as an alternative to PWHT

International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 2021
Abstract This paper proposes the temper bead welding (TBW) technique as an alternative to post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) by varying the polarity between the deposited layers while other welding variables remain the same. The work was conducted to study the effect of changing welding polarities using the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process on ...

Considerations on PWHT requirements and their effects

Revue de Métallurgie, 2008
The many heat treatments upon fabrication may deteriorate the tensile properties of the tempered base material or to alter its weldability or toughness. It is essential to take into consideration all heat treatments each zone is submitted to: base metal, heat affected zone, weld metal in order to optimize the global properties ...

Stress Relaxation Behavior in PWHT of Welded Components

Volume 6: Materials and Fabrication, Parts A and B, 2011
This paper is focused on the discussion of weld residual stress relaxation in a uniform post weld heat treatment (PWHT). In particular, the paper is attempted to address a fundamental issue related to the PWHT stress relaxation behavior, i.e., what is the dominant stress relaxation mechanism in PWHT? Is it due to creep or material strength reduction at

PWHT Requirement for Submarine Pipelines Challenges and Way Forward

Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference, 2018
Abstract The objective of this study is to assess the provision of Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of girth weld on C-Mn steel submarine pipelines and propose an alternative to avoid PWHT. As per prevailing industry practice, the majority of the existing submarine pipelines handling sour service fluid, limit the steel grade to 450 MPa ...

Omission of Intermediate Postweld Heat Treatment (PWHT) by Utilizing Low-Temperature PWHT for Welds in Pressure Vessels

2009
This study was conducted in order to establish a procedure for a low-temperature postweld heat treatment (LTPWHT) to replace conventional stress relief annealing utilized as postweld heat treatment when pressure vessels are fabricated. From'the standpoint of preventing only hydrogen-induced weld cracks during fabrication before the final PWHT, the ...

Utilizing Thermal Spray Metal Coating Technology to Avoid PWHT

CORROSION 2016, 2016
Abstract This paper presents an experience in utilizing Thermal Spray Coating Technology on top of weld build-up of CS Pressure Vessel eroded shell. The column is under rich amine service and had severe erosion on some of its internal surface of the shell.
