The complete mitochondrial genomes of two ghost moths, Thitarodes renzhiensis and Thitarodes yunnanensis: the ancestral gene arrangement in Lepidoptera [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Lepidoptera encompasses more than 160,000 described species that have been classified into 45–48 superfamilies. The previously determined Lepidoptera mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) are limited to six superfamilies of the lineage Ditrysia.

DNA metabarcoding of light trap samples vs. morphological species identification

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 2, Page 245-256, April 2024.
Five light trap samples of different complexities were subjected to COI metabarcode sequencing. Species detection rates of metabarcoding versus manual identification were compared between the samples and two different amplicons. Metabarcoding was able to detect between 46% and 69% of manually identified species.

Low redundancy among caddisflies sharing a mid‐mountain stream

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract In fast‐flowing streams, caddisfly larvae are responsible for processes that collectively determine the efficiency with which the detritivore community is able to decompose autochthonous and allochthonous detritus. This ecosystem function ensures high water quality and represents a precious service for resident rural communities.

Evolution of deceptive and true courtship songs in moths [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Ultrasonic mating signals in moths are argued to have evolved via exploitation of the receivers' sensory bias towards bat echolocation calls. We have demonstrated that female moths of the Asian corn borer are unable to distinguish between the male ...

Changes in Species Richness and Composition of Tiger Moths (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae) among Three Neotropical Ecoregions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Paraná, Yungas and Chaco Serrano ecoregions are among the most species-richterrestrial habitats at higher latitude. However, the information for tiger moths, one of the most speciose group of moths, is unknown in these ecoregion. In this study, we assess
