Stunning Intricacies of RNA Editing Complexes RECC, RESC, and REH2C: Functional Organization, Developmental Regulation, and Evolutionary History in Kinetoplastid Protists. [PDF]

open access: yesWiley Interdiscip Rev RNA
U‐indel RNA editing targets mRNA:gRNA duplexes through three key complexes that collectively govern assembly, specificity, catalysis, and developmental regulation. Modern tools, including artificial intelligence, analyze the organization, dynamics, and evolution of the remarkable holo‐editosome, opening new avenues in RNA biology and therapy.

Comparative Analysis of Volatile Defensive Secretions of Three Species of Pyrrhocoridae (Insecta: Heteroptera) by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometric Method. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
The true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) have evolved a system of well-developed scent glands that produce diverse and frequently strongly odorous compounds that act mainly as chemical protection against predators.

The 70 kDa heat shock protein assists during the repair of chilling injury in the insect, Pyrrhocoris apterus. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
BACKGROUND: The Pyrrhocoris apterus (Insecta: Heteroptera) adults attain high levels of cold tolerance during their overwintering diapause. Non-diapause reproducing adults, however, lack the capacity to express a whole array of cold-tolerance adaptations

Time measurement in insect photoperiodism: The role of photophase duration and light intensity

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2022
The initial stages of diapause induction - as summer gives way to autumn - involve a process of time measurement in which the duration of daylength (or nightlength) is determined by a photoperiodic 'clock' based upon the circadian system. In many insects

Cell Cycle-Dependent Flagellar Disassembly in a Firebug Trypanosomatid Leptomonas pyrrhocoris

open access: yesmBio, 2019
Current understanding of flagellum/cilium length regulation focuses on a few model organisms with flagella of uniform length. Leptomonas pyrrhocoris is a monoxenous trypanosomatid parasite of firebugs. When cultivated in vitro, L.

Comparative analysis of adipokinetic hormones and their receptors in Blattodea reveals novel patterns of gene evolution

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 615-633, December 2023., 2023
Comprehensive analysis of adipokinetic hormone gene evolution in Blattodea. Discovery of a novel group of decapeptides that are unique to Blaberoidea. Adipokinetic hormone receptor genes broadly reflect accepted blattodean relationships. Abstract Adipokinetic hormone (AKH) is a neuropeptide produced in the insect corpora cardiaca that plays an ...

The spread of satellite DNAs in euchromatin and insights into the multiple sex chromosome evolution in Hemiptera revealed by repeatome analysis of the bug Oxycarenus hyalinipennis

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 725-737, December 2023., 2023
The genomic analysis revealed a male‐biased abundance of satellite DNAs (satDNAs) in the bug Oxycarenus hyalinipennis. The complementary chromosomal analysis by fluorescence in situ hybridization supported the notion of satDNA enrichment on the Y chromosome of the species.

Complete metamorphosis and microbiota turnover in insects

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 23, Page 6543-6551, December 2023., 2023
Abstract The insects constitute the majority of animal diversity. Most insects are holometabolous: during complete metamorphosis their bodies are radically reorganized. This reorganization poses a significant challenge to the gut microbiota, as the gut is replaced during pupation, a process that does not occur in hemimetabolous insects.
