A Neutrophil Storage Pool in the Fetal Liver is the Principal Source of the Postnatal Neutrophil Surge

Neutrophils surge in mammalian neonates within 24 h after birth, but their origin is unknown. Here, we show that fetal liver neutrophils accumulate in late gestation via G‐CSF and are released postpartum. In rat and mouse neonates, liver neutrophil numbers drop sharply within 12 h of birth.
