Abstract New Zealand's early‐twentieth‐century health service was a two‐tier system of state hospitals supported by an expanding network of over 300 private hospitals, almost exclusively owned by nurses and midwives. This article will show that this environment was created by a legislative framework introduced between 1901 and 1906, requiring nurses ...

Symbol‐Level GRAND‐Assisted Detection for Polar‐Coded Spatial Modulation in MIMO Systems
This research presents an integrated polar‐coded spatial modulation (PCSM) transceiver scheme for MIMO transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed architecture employs linear spatial signal processing for antenna and symbol estimation, followed by symbol‐level guessing random additive noise decoding (symbol‐level GRAND)–assisted detection ...

Dynamic QAM Mapping for Physical-Layer Security Using Digital Chaos
This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a physical-layer data encryption scheme using multi-fold chaotic mapping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols in orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexed passive optical network (OFDM-PON).

Defence traits vary across leaf ages in the thistles (Cardueae)
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plants produce a variety of structural and chemical defences to deter herbivores, which can covary across every scale of biological organization. Along these lines, it has been suggested that young leaves differ from old leaves in their defence strategies, but studies ...

Adaptively Loaded IM/DD Offset-QAM OFDM Based on Set-Partitioned QAM Formats
We propose an adaptive-loading algorithm for SP-QAM formats, and experimentally show that SP-offset-QAM outperforms conventional offset-QAM and conventional SP-QAM, in adaptive-loaded IM/DD OFDM systems, and achieves >40 Gbit/s at 50 km without any guard interval.

Physical Layer Network Coding for Two-Way Relaying with QAM
The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two way relaying scenario was studied in [1], [3], [4] and [5]. In [7] it was shown that every network coding map that satisfies the exclusive law is representable by a Latin Square ...
