Changes in Flood Magnitude and Frequency Projected for Vulnerable Regions and Major Wetlands of South America

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration elevates atmospheric temperature and enhances water storage capacity. This could lead to more extreme precipitation events, while simultaneously, higher temperatures may cause land and soil to dry out.

An Algorithm to Develop a Satellite‐Based Atmospheric River Database

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Atmospheric rivers (ARs) feature transient filaments of enhanced moisture transport. Given their significant influence on regional weather extremes and global hydrological cycle, there have been extensive AR studies based on reanalyses or in‐situ ...

Hall Scale in the Earth's Magnetosphere and Magnetospheric Substorm

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
We investigate the contribution of the Hall term on the generalized Ohm's law in magnetospheric plasmas. In particular, we focus on its role in processes that lead to the formation of substorm perturbations deep inside the magnetosphere.

High Methane Production and Emission From Tropical Seagrasses Through Methylotrophic Methanogenesis

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas that reduces the carbon sequestration capacity of seagrass meadows. However, our understanding of CH4 production and emission from these important carbon sinks is limited.

Contributions of Atmospheric Ridging and Low Soil Moisture to the Record‐Breaking June 2023 Mexico‐Texas Heatwave

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
June 2023 witnessed the hottest, largest, and longest‐lasting heatwave across Mexico and Texas between 1940 and 2023. We apply constructed analogs with multiple linear regression models to quantify the contribution of different drivers to daily ...

A Novel Approach to Tsunami Prediction Using Ambient Noise‐Derived Green's Functions

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Conventional tsunami simulations rely on accurate bathymetric data, posing challenges in regions lacking such information. We introduce a novel approach using ambient noise interferometry to derive empirical Green's functions of infragravity waves from ...

Amphibole's Influence on Mid‐Lithosphere Discontinuity: Insights From Electrical Conductivity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The potential role of metasomatism‐induced hydrated layers, such as amphibole, in causing the mid‐lithospheric discontinuities (MLDs) has been widely debated.

Significant Plasma Density Depletion From High‐ to Mid‐Latitude Ionosphere During the Super Storm in May 2024

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
We demonstrate the global response of the ionosphere to the geomagnetic super storm on 10–11 May 2024. The in situ observations from the Swarm spacecraft show a rapid depletion of plasma density in the dawn and dusk sectors following the storm.

Land‐Air Exchanges of Various Gaseous Nitrogen Species in an Urban Wetland Based on In Situ Flux Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Wetlands are universally recognized as hotspots for nitrogen cycling and gaseous nitrogen emissions. In this study, the fluxes of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ammonia (NH3), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were observed seasonally in the mud and ...

Electron Beams Generated by the Electron Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instability at a Quasi‐Perpendicular Shock

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Electron beams are considered to be important free energy sources for the excitation of various plasma waves at quasi‐perpendicular shocks. In this article, we perform a two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulation of a low‐plasma‐β quasi‐perpendicular ...
