Significant Plasma Density Depletion From High‐ to Mid‐Latitude Ionosphere During the Super Storm in May 2024

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
We demonstrate the global response of the ionosphere to the geomagnetic super storm on 10–11 May 2024. The in situ observations from the Swarm spacecraft show a rapid depletion of plasma density in the dawn and dusk sectors following the storm.

Ramp‐Like PM 2.5 Accumulation Process and Z‐Less Similarity in the Stable Boundary Layer

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
Similar ramp‐like structures exist in the time variations of surface PM 2.5 accumulation during the four different heavy haze pollution processes in Beijing, from 3 November 2017 to 15 January 2018.

Land‐Air Exchanges of Various Gaseous Nitrogen Species in an Urban Wetland Based on In Situ Flux Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Wetlands are universally recognized as hotspots for nitrogen cycling and gaseous nitrogen emissions. In this study, the fluxes of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ammonia (NH3), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were observed seasonally in the mud and ...

Observations of the Wire Destruction and Plasma Channel Reestablishment Process During the Initial Stage of Triggered Lightning

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
The wire destruction and plasma channel reestablishment process during the initial stage of a triggered lightning is analyzed based on comprehensive observations, including very high frequency (VHF) mapping array, electric‐magnetic field, and high‐speed ...

Electron Beams Generated by the Electron Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instability at a Quasi‐Perpendicular Shock

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Electron beams are considered to be important free energy sources for the excitation of various plasma waves at quasi‐perpendicular shocks. In this article, we perform a two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell simulation of a low‐plasma‐β quasi‐perpendicular ...

Effects of Chemical Feedbacks on Decadal Methane Emissions Estimates

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
The coupled chemistry of methane, carbon monoxide (CO), and hydroxyl radical (OH) can modulate methane's 9‐year lifetime. This is often ignored in methane flux inversions, and the impacts of neglecting interactive chemistry have not been quantified ...

Gradually Disappearing Cross‐Seasonal Teleconnection Between ENSO and Tibetan Plateau Upper‐Level Westerlies

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Changes in the Tibetan Plateau upper‐level westerlies (TPUW) and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are crucial in regulating local hydrological cycles and large‐range climate.

The Discharge Preceding the Intense Reillumination in Positive Leader Steps Under the Slow Varying Ambient Electric Field

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2020
Under the slow varying ambient electric field, positive leader propagation exhibits steps characterized by intense reilluminations and abrupt elongations. These steps are currently not well understood.
