Mechanics of human quadriceps muscle
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1994Mechanics of human quadriceps muscle strips (vastus lateralis; n = 10) were investigated over the whole load continuum. Mechanical experiments were performed at 29 degrees C and in both twitch and tetanus modes. For a given level of isotonic total load (P) and over a large part of the contraction phase, instantaneous velocity (V) was shown to be a ...

Infarction of the Quadriceps Muscle
Southern Medical Journal, 1986Accelerated atherosclerosis is a common and recognized complication of diabetes mellitus. We have reported the fifth case of spontaneous infarction of a portion of the quadriceps muscle group in a patient with diabetes mellitus.

Knee effusion and quadriceps muscle strength
Clinical Biomechanics, 1992Ten healthy subjects with no musculoskeletal problems were tested using a computerized exercise dynamometer. Quadriceps femoris concentric performance was examined during maximal effort isokinetic knee extension at joint angular velocities of 2.09 and 4.18 rad s(-1).

Postcontraction changes of muscle architecture in human quadriceps muscle
Muscle & Nerve, 2004AbstractMaximal voluntary contraction changes the mechanical properties of skeletal muscle. Using ultrasound, we investigated whether these changes are reflected by changes in muscle architecture in the vastus lateralis muscle of 8 healthy volunteers. The mean pennation angle during the time interval from 3 to 6 min after maximal voluntary contraction (

A Critical Review of Electrical Stimulation of the Quadriceps Muscles
Critical Reviews in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, 1997Electrical stimulation (ES) has played an important role in the rehabilitation of muscle for many years. Recently, regimes and stimulators have become more sophisticated in an attempt to minimize loss of, or improve, muscle strength, atrophy, and function.

CONTRACTURE OF THE QUADRICEPS MUSCLE
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British volume, 19641. Contracture of parts of the quadriceps muscle is not uncommon and is often accompanied by tightness of the ilio-tibial tract. It is suggested that this may follow intramuscular injections. 2. Recurrent dislocation of the patella can be a consequence of this muscle contracture. 3.

Biarticular and monoarticular muscle activation and injury in human quadriceps muscle
European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2001We hypothesized that activation of the quadriceps femoris muscle group during eccentric exercise is related to the increase in magnitude of several markers of muscle injury that developed during the next week. Fourteen male subjects performed six to eight sets of five to ten repetitions of single-leg eccentric-only seated knee extension exercise ...

Electrical Stimulation in Exercise of the Quadriceps Femoris Muscle
Physical Therapy, 1979Thirty-seven healthy subjects took part in an investigation to determine if the application of electrical stimulation to normal muscle, in combination with exercise, augments strength. Subjects were divided into three groups. Grwoup A (n = 14) was a control group (no exercise, no electrical stimulation).

Characterization of the human quadriceps muscle in active elders
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2001To compare muscle activation deficits and muscle physiology in older versus younger adults.A maximal volitional isometric contraction of the quadriceps muscle with burst-superimposition was used to assess strength and activation. In addition, force-frequency testing during fresh, fatigue, and recovery conditions and electrically elicited fatigue ...

Significance of the Strength of the Quadriceps Muscles in Children with Myelomeningocele
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1987A study of 109 patients with myelomeningocele indicates that useful assessment of quadriceps power can be made during the first 3 years of life. In 21 of 22 patients assessed in those years as having grade 4 quadriceps power, an increase in power was observed in ensuing years, but no such trend was observed in patients with less quadriceps power.
