Similarity accounts of counterfactuals: A reality check1
Abstract To an unusual extent, philosophers agree that counterfactuals have truth conditions involving the most similar possible worlds where their antecedents are true, in the style of the celebrated and path‐breaking Stalnaker/Lewis accounts. Roughly, these accounts say that the counterfactual if A were the case, C would be the case is true if and ...

Mixmaster quantum cosmology in terms of physical dynamics [PDF]
An approach to quantum cosmology, relying on strengths of both canonical and path integral formalisms, is applied to the cosmological model, Bianchi type IX. Physical quantum states are constructed on the maximal slice of the cosmological history. A path integral is derived which evolves observables off the maximal slice. This result is compared a path

Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity and the foundation of Loop Quantum Cosmology [PDF]
Quantum Reduced Loop Gravity is a promising framework for linking Loop Quantum Gravity and the effective semiclassical dynamics of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We review its basic achievements and its main perspectives, outlining how it provides a quantum description of the Universe in terms of a cuboidal graph which constitutes the proper framework for ...

Anthropology and change over the ‘land rights era’: Towards treaties?
Abstract Australia has made no treaties with its Indigenous peoples. Despite that, over the past five decades (the ‘land rights era’ of the title), Australia has granted proportionally more land area to Indigenous interests than have other, treaty‐making Anglo settler colonies (Canada, the United States, New Zealand). Despite complexities of comparison

Place as a Metaphysical Problem in Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas
Abstract Thomas Aquinas’ particular synthesis of Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism, and the intellectual tradition it inaugurated, has at least twice faced critical challenges from developments in physics. Besieged by the sixteenth and seventeenth century novatores and more or less ignored by the nineteenth‐ and twentieth‐century practitioners of ...

Quantum cosmology and eternal inflation [PDF]
This contribution consists of two parts. In the first part, I review the tunneling approach to quantum cosmology and comment on the alternative approaches. In the second part, I discuss the relation between quantum cosmology and eternal inflation. In particular, I discuss whether or not we need quantum cosmology in the light of eternal inflation, and ...

From the conformal anomaly to the Virasoro algebra
Abstract The conformal anomaly and the Virasoro algebra are fundamental aspects of two‐dimensional conformal field theory and conformally covariant models in planar random geometry. In this article, we explicitly derive the Virasoro algebra from an axiomatization of the conformal anomaly in terms of real determinant lines, one‐dimensional vector spaces

Quantum Cosmology in Four Dimensions [PDF]
We analyze the cosmological solutions to the recently proposed nonlocal quantum effective action for gravity with a cosmological term. We show that the vacuum energy decays with a slow-roll parameter proportional to the anomalous gravitational dressings.

Abstract Current observations show that a significant fraction of the Universe is composed of dark energy and dark matter. In this paper, the simultaneous effects of these dark sectors on the Euler–Heisenberg black hole are investigated, using the quintessence matter field and perfect fluid to model them. In particular, the black hole's thermodynamics,

Quantum-theoretical description of the cosmological constant as the zero-point energy [PDF]
The present paper seeks to construct a quantum theory of the cosmological constant in which its presently observed very small value emerges naturally.
